The Way To Go High Low: A Street Chic Fitness Look

I was chatting with a woman at a department store just the other day (I often become friends with strangers while shopping). Based on what she was wearing (bright colored leggings a hooded jacket and gym shoes) I asked her if she was going to or coming from a work out. She answered “she might” be working out later that day (code for NO). It made me pause and wonder. Her outfit was not what I would consider to be a street chic fitness look because she looked more like she was going to the gym. She was getting the “athleisure” look all wrong.

I looked around the store and realized I was seeing many women dressed to work out, but perhaps they, too, were just going for a comfortable fitness look. Now that athleisure wear and fitness apparel have become more mainstream and popular for street wear, I think there has been a bit of confusion regarding how to sport the look. Pun intended. With so many fitness wear options available (both high end and low end) there is no reason to not look totally chic on the street.

how to master the athleisure look

I came up with a few guidelines to dressing in a street worthy fitness look. Here are few questions to ask yourself before you leave the house.

• Are you really working out? If you look like you are going to work out, going for a run or to the gym and are actually doing one of these activities…that is fine! But if If you look like you are going to work out and you are not, than you are missing the mark.

• Are you trying to be sporty in your appearance? On the flip side, if you are going to work out and you have a cool urban fitness assemble on, then you get it! In fact, with this look, if you so desire, you can even skip the gym!

To get achieve this look properly, start with a long sleeve white t-shirt over a sports bra. Invest in one from Under Armour with all the fitness bells and whistles or get one from Target for only ten bucks! Try some bold colorblocked leggings like these No Ka’Oi ones from Barneys or save on Champion leggings from Target. Now that the weather is cooler you can cover up in a sporty quilted down jacket. Invest in a Canada Goose jacket, or try one from The North Face for a quarter of the price. All black high top shoes  like these Nike Lunar Force 1 Duckboots are much better for the street than white or bright gym shoes. Or get the look for less with these H&M hightops, and change into your proper gym shoes shoes when you actually get to the gym (wink, wink).
