Fashion Through The Ages: The Peasant Blouse – Again!

We were hit over the head with the peasant blouse for spring, and it is still going strong for fall 2016. I remember a favorite peasant blouse I owned and wore in the late 70s. It was black cotton with a tiny blue and white floral print with adjustable drawstrings at the neckline and the waist. It was comfortable and looked perfect with faded high waist wide leg jeans! This Ulla Johnson Blouse (pictured above) reminds me of it! You may be thinking “Oh no, not that look…I don’t want to go there again.” But you don’t have to, because this time around (just as it usually is with fashion) the look is much different.

There are many many options of Boho-inspired shirts and peasant blouses available in stores right now. You will find peasant blouses with peplums, lace up necklines, tie necks, embroidery, border prints, on or off shoulder, lace insets and mixed prints. Stay away from looks that are too girly, look like a costume or scream festival fashion. Find a style, print or color combination you love. In dark and more intense colors, the peasant blouse makes the perfect summer-to-fall transition piece. Sure it will look great with jeans, but think about all your styling options. I’m inspired by the fall ’16 runway looks. Diane Von Furstenburg shows a Boho print blouse with a long skirt and boots and Anna Sui layers a sweater over a bright colored floral blouse. If prints aren’t your thing, you can go with a solid color or even black or white. The shapes of these blouses are new and that’s the exciting part.

Are you convinced yet? If you want to add one new piece to your wardrobe to give it a boost, make it a peasant blouse or Boho inspired shirt or top. You can wear it now and later!
