The Perfect Thanksgiving Outfit: Style it High or Low

You may already have made your plans for the Thanksgiving holiday, but did you think about what you’re going to wear? This is very important, so you should not wait until the last minute. You may be traveling to see family in another state or town, you may be going out to a nearby restaurant, or you may simply be walking down the street to a neighbor’s house to celebrate. But whether you are going near or far, you will want to look your best for the occasion. I put together this Thanksgiving outfit for women over 40 and I’ll show you how to style it high or low.

Thanksgiving Outfit For Women Over 40

This outfit of a plaid blazer, black pants, a bright colored shirt, black booties and a cream mini bag is comprised of pieces you will definitely wear again. The items are practical, comfortable (you want to eat, right?) and also on-trend. This look is totally appropriate for women over 40, too.

Thanksgiving Outfit Styling Tips

1. Start with jacket. Plaid jackets are a huge trend this season and it just may be the only thing you need to update your fall wardrobe. The jacket I chose is very versatile. It goes with black pants or jeans, tan or grey chinos, leather pants and of course your favorite faded denim. Bright shots of color work under it as well. I show it with an orange shirt, but you can wear burgundy, olive, yellow, forest green or cobalt tops or sweaters, and of course your classic black turtleneck. Ignore the exact colors running through the glen plaid and try another color. It may even be a pink pastel. It will work, I promise you!

2. Be comfortable. This time of year, the weather can be unpredictable, so comfortable pants with a bit of stretch or give will hold their shape through a long day or if you need to travel to your holiday destination. A cotton blend shirt will keep you both warm or cool. If it gets warm, this outfit will still look chic if you need to take off the jacket. Also, let’s not kid ourselves…pants with some give are ideal if you should overeat too.

3. Dress up! I know many families are very casual for holiday get-togethers, but it is never out of place, especially for a holiday, to dress up. It does not have to be much, but a bright colored top with your favorite jewelry will make you stand out. This outfit can blend in to any party whether the other guests are in dresses or denim.

What Is High Low Styling?

This look is a perfect example. You can get this outfit made up of all high-end fashion and spend a lot, or save with low-priced finds. Or you can pick and choose a few from either side and get a mix of high and low styling. For example, you can save by purchasing all the low priced apparel, but still purchase the YSL bag. Or maybe you covet the designer jacket, so you can save by buying the rest of the outfit on the low priced side. If you want to save money, I recommend splurging on a standout piece, perhaps not on the black pants (as gorgeous as they may be) unless you can afford the whole ensemble.

The Plaid Jacket

Veronica Beard makes some of the best jackets and this Prince of Wales checked linen and cotton-blend blazer for $695 is very versatile and a great investment on the high-end. Or you can save with this 1.State Melody plaid blazer, which has a nicely fitted but not too tight shape for only $139.

A Perfect Pair Of Black Pants

You may already have a great pair of pants that fit you well and go with everything. If not, I recommend a slightly cropped flat front trouser style like these impeccable lightweight wool Givenchy pants for $1100. What? That price is outrageous? No problem! These Nic+Zoe Wonderstretch Straight Leg Pants are a fabulous option for $128 and they come in petite sizes, too.

Comfortable Menswear Style Shirt

Menswear styling has become the norm, and an investment in an oversize shirt is worth it! You can wear this TRE by Natalie Ratabesi wool, cotton and silk-blend voile shirt multiple ways, under jackets and sweaters or over tanks and tees. It is a beautiful shirt and worth the price of $670. But to get the same brilliant look for your buck, this Everlane silky cotton relaxed shirt is priced at only $50.

The Black Booties

Most of us are obsessed with having a basic pair of easy-to-walk-in black booties. If you want a pair you will keep and wear for the next several years, these Tod’s Leather Chelsea boots will do the trick, and are a worthwhile investment of $895. But if you want to try a new style this year, these Chinese Laundry Davinna booties will work for only $79.95.

A Cream Colored Camera Bag

For you handbag, any color will do but I am drawn to this Saint Laurent bag in a color called New Powder for $995. If you are looking to invest in a YSL this may be the color for you. It’s very neutral, and will brighten up any look with a fresh drop of cream! This bag is the perfect size to carry your phone and essentials like lipstick and a small billfold so it is worth the investment. But another designer, Tory Burch offers this Perry Bombe leather crossbody bag in the same color for only $248. It is more casual, with a mustard colored strap, and you may actually carry it more!
