A Vintage Neckline That’s Flattering? Sweetheart!

Nothing looks (and even sounds) as retro as a sweetheart neckline! It takes me back to reading books written in the 50s and 60s – especially the part when they start describing what the main character wore for her date. It was often a dress with sweetheart neckline worn with little locket charm necklace.

So why is it called a sweetheart neckline? According to Miran Webster it’s a neckline for women’s clothing that is high in back and low in front and is scalloped to resemble the top of a heart. It is easy to wear and super flattering for most women. That’s why designers often present sweetheart necklines to style their spring and summer collections.

Victoria Beckham shows a modern approach to the sweetheart neckline with a criss-cross back dress in crisp denim. Marc Jacobs and Sachin & Babi both offer beautifully fitted retro dresses in gorgeous flora patterns. They have a vintage feel so you won’t mind investing in a designer dress like this as you can wear it year after year. If you don’t need another dress to round out your summer wardrobe you can sport the flattering sweetheart neckline with glamorous swimwear by La Blanca and feel just like a Barbie Doll. Or on a warm weather day opt for a cool peplum style knit top like this Chelsea28 stretch knit bustier.

You will find many variations of fashion with sweatheart necklines, including strapless, off the shoulder and cold shoulder, but I recommend styles like these where you can still wear a bra and feel comfortable!
