The Top Sweater Trends For Winter 2020

Sweater season is one of our favorite parts of the year. Despite the sometimes bitter cold, there is something that is just comforting about pulling on a soft and cozy knit and winter fashion in general that makes us want to curl up with a warm beverage and a good book. And while that is certainly a great idea, there are a lot of fashion sweaters available this season that you’ll want to wear out and about as well. Here are some of the top sweater trends and best styles for women over 40 in 2020.

Best Sweaters For Women Over 40

Turtleneck Tunics

Turtleneck tunic sweaters are best when they are a little oversized or have unique details like wider sleeves. Leave the fitted ribbed nineties redux turtlenecks to the twenty-somethings. We love this perfectly draped Free People tunic (particularly in the deep jade or tobacco color ways, and ivory is a glamorous choice as well), which would be perfect thrown over leggings, leather pants, skinny jeans, or virtually anything else. Swap out a hoodie for a tunic like this to make your winter looks more grown-up.

Dolman Sleeve Fashion Sweater

Wider sleeves, puffed sleeves, and poet sleeves are popular now, but perhaps one of the greatest things to throw on over basically everything in the winter is a dolman sleeve sweater (a dolman sleeve is very wide at the top of the arm and narrows towards the wrist or elbow, cut in one piece with the body of the garment). This cardigan by Leith comes in a bunch of great neutrals along with some fun colors (we are partial to the burgundy or the rich green shades). We also love this v-neck style dolman sweater that’s conveniently inexpensive from  Amazon. You can never go wrong with a simple gray sweater and the neutral look makes it an excellent choice to pair with bold or bright pants, scarves and jewelry.

Intarsia Print Sweaters

Intarsia is a specialized knitting technique that is used to create prints that are woven right into the sweater (or any other knit piece). It can be done quite elegantly. Just check out this super feminine MinkPink floral sweater from Urban Outfitters. Fair isle patterned sweaters for women are always a classic as well, and we like the poet-style sleeves on this A.L.C. fair isle turtleneck sweater. Try an intarsia sweater for less with this leopard print cardigan from Amazon. We adore the convenient pockets and pretty much all the color selections, although something about the snowy white and gray is particularly appealing.

Criss-Cross

This drapey style criss-cross front sweater is perfect with skinny pants or leggings and ankle boots or even sneakers for a casual look. This one from Amazon is a great deal and a fun way to experiment with the look, and it comes in a whole range of colors. We are fans of the light blue hues which would be perfect to wear with black, white and every variation of gray. Add a lacy cami underneath to make the whole style a bit more feminine, or layer a thin turtleneck or crew neck top underneath for those super cold days.

Color-Blocking

The color-blocking trend shows no sign of going away any time soon, but we like more subtle versions like this tan and ivory French Connection turtleneck sweater, which would be as perfect with jeans for an everyday look as it would be with winter white pants and some sparkle for a dressier occasion.

sweater trends off the shoulder

Off-The-Shoulder

This might seem like a tough look to wear, but it is certainly trendy and chances are that your collar bones and upper shoulders are still an area you might like to show off. Skip the strapless bra in favor of a pretty bralette or camisole, add some dangly earrings, and you’ll be glamorous and super-comfortable. This Treasure & Bond sweater is the perfect way to do an off-the-shoulder or off of one-shoulder look in a modern, non-Flashdance kind of way.

While fall and winter fashion trends almost always include sweaters and knits of some kind, we think winter 2020 has some of the most unique and best sweaters for women we’ve ever seen that will remain stylish for several cold weather seasons to come.

What’s your favorite warm and fashionable sweater for the depths of winter, and what do you pair it with?
