Despite the unseasonal warmth we’ve been experiencing in cities like Chicago and New York this fall, as our beloved Jon Snow likes to say, “Winter is coming.” So to prep our minds, bodies and wardrobes for the impending frost, we’ve started working in warm weather fabrics one accessory and outerwear staple at a time. One of the best go-to fabrics that blends fashion and function is shearling. Designers have a field day with the soft and fuzzy fabrics on fall/winter fabrics and 2016 was no exception. The only down side is that the luxe layer can often be pricey. So we’ve rounded up some of the best ways to work the warmth into your wardrobe without breaking the bank.
Face it, there’s nothing more snuggly when the windchill sets in than donning an absurdly warm hat and pulling it down over your ears. Shearling was pretty much made for that exact feeling, so the first way we wanted to incorporate it into our everyday wear was with the obligatory trapper hat. This one piece can singlehandedly warm your head from fall until spring and be paired with anything from a flannel and vest to a trench coat and heels.
Speaking of vests, what’s the point of having “transitional weather” if we can’t have transitional outerwear? Shearling vests and coats shown on the Fall/Winter 2016 runway were endlessly chic, but can easily run into the thousands. So what if we just want a little furry touch up to punctuate an already fabulous fall outfit? From scouring the virtual racks, we found Hollister has a suitably stylish shearling and suede vest that easily passed the “looks more expensive than it is” test. And at under $40, no one’s the wiser and your winter wardrobe budget will thank you.
Afraid of getting the winter blues? Not when you have the coolest blue to keep your tootsies warm this winter. We love the rich royal blue of the leather and shearling lining of POM’D’API’s booties, a bold hue to cut through the blacks and grays of the winter weather blahs. And at less that $200, you found a steal for a chic investment piece that’s sure to last you many cold nights to come.
With menswear as a major trend this season, we thought we’d skip the middle man and go directly to incorporating a few menswear pieces into the mix. You would never tell this shearling-lined denim jacket from AMI is actually menswear, due to the slim fit and oversized collar. Shearling lined jackets are perhaps the most popular shearling staple, and who’s to say we can’t join in on the boys club fun?
