Runway To Real Way: Red, White and Blue

Happy it’s almost Independence Day? Almost being the operative word, in that you still have a few more days to perk up and pick out some truly patriotic duds that don’t sacrifice style. Don’t get us wrong – we love bespangling ourselves in red, white and blue as much as the next person to celebrate our nation’s independence. We would just like to see the days of kitschy, costumey stars and stripes forever be replaced with grown up options that we could actually be seen wearing throughout the rest of the year. And behold: we believe we’ve found just that.

Luckily, locating realistic red pieces this season has been no trouble at all. Many designers embraced the crimsons, roses and vermillions for Spring 2014 in one chic iteration after another. A particular piece that had us tickled pink, er, red was the bold and boxy romper from Vivienne Tam. Not for the faint of heart, the plunging neckline of this strawberry-colored statement may be perfect for the runway but may raise one eyebrow too many on the teeming streets of the big city. Thus, we located a perfectly adorable alternative from Tallow. The same striking scarlet in a sweetly celebratory silhouette.

What fun it is to replace the icy winter whites with the billowy breezes of a summer ivory. Confections carved from silk, linen, and sheer, whispery jersey all marched down the Spring 2014 runways in a pearly haze. Altuzzura decided to tip his hat to the maxi skirt trend, an always popular antidote for summer’s office bottom doldrums. Yes the high slit took his skirt from daytime to diva, which is what made us sit up and take notice. A subtly sexy piece for any 4th fete from a dinner party to the beach, this milky maxi become much more possible (thigh slit and all), with this much less sticker-shocking option from Leon Max.

Blue is always the easiest color to crack simply because people often take the easy way out: denim. And of course, where else can you wear – dare we say – denim shorts or a mini skirt if not at at barbecue over 4th of July weekend? But like all things, smart choices can still be made. Tommy Hilfiger, the King of Sporty Casual Chic for over four decades, trotted out denim shorts this season that made us rethink our entire argument against them. Simple, streamlined, and structured, he made denim shorts look appropriate for grown ups (one of the many reasons our love affair for him will continue for the next forty years). Another designer who hasn’t been at the game as long, yet still seems to get it when it comes to fit, is Victoria Beckham. Her simply named Denim Shorts look like they could be a tennis skirt from the coolest doubles match ever. And yet they are shorts. For under $200. If there was ever a case for trying out denim this summer, this is it.
