Runway To Real Way: That’s What She Plaid

It’s Fashion Week season! Runways from New York to Milan are awash with the latest colors, patterns and fabrics gearing up for Spring 2018, while the rest of us are starting to dig into our closets for those first fall pieces. And while the likes of suede, leather and trench coats are all in our near future, we thought this season, we’d start to take a closer at plaid.

Plaid has always been synonymous with fall fashion but for the Fall 2017 season, designers took the trend to a whole new level, layering patterns and mixing and matching fabrics and lengths. And while plaid has a history of being solely affiliated with school girls and prep schools, the current take is not only sophisticated, but can be both playful or refined.

Mara Hoffman mixed box patterns of various sizes to make a chic daywear ensemble. We set out in search of work-worthy pants in plaid and found these pretty, cropped trousers from T Tahari. Paired with a crisp white blouse and blazer, and we’ve uncovered your go-to work outfit to wear all season long.

Long-sleeved plaid shirts are a great transitional piece to move into cooler fall nights. Designers like Rosie Assoulin carved out stylish takes on the plaid long-sleeved blouse, but we prefer the snuggly soft fabric of a classic fall flannel. This Brooks Brothers shirt is a contender that’ll keep you cozy until the holidays.

While the school girl skirt is out, who says we can’t have a little age-appropriate fun with our plaid skirts? Longer lengths (also seen at Rosie Assouline) or classic cuts to the knee are still welcome additions to a fall weekend outfit, either paired with a chunky sweater as seen at Tory Burch, or in this perfectly polished little frock from Modcloth. Our apple picking uniform is complete!

Finally, plaid outerwear is absolutely essential in trying out the trend. Oversized manteaus were all the rage last season, showing up on the runways of designers like Alexander Wang. We picked a more everyday silhouette in this special ASOS collaboration with Gloverall, a modern take on a cult classic that we’ll be wearing for many falls to come.
