Relaxing Activities To Do During Self-Quarantine

Let’s face it, we’re all already probably a little bit low-key or high-key on edge right now after being cooped up indoors with nothing but doom and gloom on the news. That’s when it is the perfect time to turn off the TV and do something else that will let you escape for a while. This is where relaxing activities, distractions, diversions, or whatever you want to call them come in.

Relaxing Activities During Self-Quarantine

There are plenty of relaxing activities you may enjoy including puzzles, board games, coloring books, painting-by-number or listening to music.

Shutterfly also lets you make your own puzzles from your photos, which can be a fun way to bond with your family or add another layer to great memories.

Board Games

If you are isolating with your family or partner, playing a board game can be a great way to connect without using screens. Risk is one of our personal favorites simply because you can have up to six players – or only two – and it can last for actual days depending on your competitive spirit. But you can never go wrong with the old classics – Monopoly, Scrabble, or Yahtzee can be wonderful. Overstock has a bunch of great deals on a variety of board games if you don’t have them in the house already.

Relaxing Activities playing cards
Theory Eleven High Victorian Playing Cards, $7.99

Card Games

Like board games, playing cards can keep you busy with anyone you are quarantined with; or if you are on your own, you can always play online or play solitaire. That said, Blackjack is always fun, War can last forever, and Gin Rummy or Ulcer could be regional favorites. Want to add something to your game? A beautiful deck of cards like these Victorian playing cards might make things more chic. Want a wild card (game)? Uno can get crazy competitive! And you can even play it via an app if you are self-isolating.

Crossword Puzzles

There are so many ways to do crossword puzzles online – and right now, no one probably wants to deal with decontaminating an actual newspaper. Here are some of the most common crossword puzzle apps – but we also like the ability to challenge friends that you can do with the NYT, Washington Post, or Houston Chronicle crosswords.

Coloring Books

Coloring books haven’t been just for kids for a long time, and sitting down with a favorite movie or TV series while you color can be just the ticket when you need to escape the world and chill out for a bit. We tend to enjoy the 100 Flowers or the 100 Animals coloring books, but there are hundreds of options out there to suit your taste. Just add a set of fine point markers or colored pencils and you’re all set.

Relaxing Activities painting

Painting

You can try painting or drawing, sketching, pastels, charcoals, or what have you. If you’ve always been artistic but haven’t had the chance to sit down and create, carve out some time to do just that. Need ideas or some direction? You can order a paint-by-number kit from sites like Canvas By Numbers or just follow Bob Ross or other tutorials on YouTube.

Tarot Deck and Guidebook fountainof30
The Wild Unknown Tarot Deck and Guidebook by Kim Krans, $23.49

Tarot Cards

While you may or not believe in Tarot, learning about the history of the cards and how to read can be fun and distracting. You can order your own set – we like the Wild Unknown set which comes with its own guidebook – or just do it digitally. And here’s a class where you can learn how to read them – get a friend or two on FaceTime or Zoom and have a fun Tarot night!

Spotify how-to

Music

Building epic playlists and discovering new artists can be a good distraction, whether you are making them for yourself, your partner, your friends and family, or for the web at large with public playlists on Spotify or YouTube. Just lose yourself in music for a while! A good challenge might be to listen to one brand new song from an artist you’ve never heard of every day – or alternatively, listen to an old album all the way through that you haven’t touched in years. You never know what you might discover or rediscover.

What are your favorite activities to do when you’re stuck at home right now (besides Netflix and wine)? Anything unique or fun? We’ll add your suggestions to this post and share them on our Facebook group!
