Project Runway All Stars season 2 kicked off with a group of catty contestants, a new host, and the biggest prize in Project Runway history. Carolyn Murphy, the American supermodel and actress, hosts the new season, but she acted too sweet to keep up with the snarky attitudes of the contestants. Hopefully she will be able to grow out of her kind demeanor as the season progresses. While she proved herself to be a great host, she is no Heidi Klum.
This season altered the same old Project Runway formula by eliminating immunities, having designers style from a wall of Nine West products, and shaking up the season with a grand prize worth roughly $750K. The winner will get a spread in Marie Claire Magazine, be able to be the contributing editor for one year at Marie Claire, win an all expense paid trip around the world to spots like Milan, Berlin, Tokyo, and Paris to attend Fashion Week, an HP and Intel technology suite and office space, a sewing and embroidery studio from Brother, $150,000, and finally, the launch of their very own private label with Nine West. If you aren’t regretting letting your mother teach you how to sew now, I don’t think you ever will.
Joanna Coles, Marie Claire editor, in place of Tim Gunn on All Stars, explained (unusually slowly) the first designer challenge which appropriately, is all about attitude. The contestants were broken up into two teams with Wendy Pepper the last to be picked (surprise!). Each group chose from a list of attitude suggestions, creating Team Bold and Team Confident.
After a quick trip to Mood, designers began planning their collections. Joanna Coles’ trip around the work room proved that old players kept their same habits, even in a new game. Peach created a look fit for a tennis player, Ivy had a sob story to back up her attitude adjustment (although it was depressing), and Joshua was cattier than ever before. Andrae had terrible time management issues and trouble figuring out who his “girl” was. To compensate for lost time, he asked other designers to help him, which lead to some spiteful responses.
Laura Mercier’s artists styled the models before their trip down the runway. Along with host Carolyn Murphy, judges Georgina Chapman and Isaac Mizrahi accompanied guest judges Rachel Roy and last season’s winner, Mondo Guerra. Team Bold’s look was very cohesive but a bit too simplified. They kept to a minimal color story of black and cobalt blue. Team Confident played around with romanticism and texture. It was clear why Team Confident was the winning team.
Anthony Ryan, Ivy and Casanova took top spots while Suede, Peach and Andrae were condemned to the group of low scores. Casanova created a fresh, tone-on-tone dress with a lace scalloped back, but judges regretted his choice in skirt length. Ivy created an interesting blazer with symmetrical lace placements, but most of the judges were bothered by her use of leather shorts. Anthony Ryan’s outfit, the winning look, was fresh and incorporated a lace back, but the skinny white pants could have been better fit. As for Suede’s handkerchief skirt, Peach’s hideous tennis player dress, and Andrae’s overly complex outfit, one of them certainly had to go. In the end, who was the first to go? The judges tossed Peach like an overly ripe piece of fruit.
