Proenza Schouler has been a steady staple in fashion weeks of the past and have proved to be a reliable source of trends to look to in seasons to come. Their New York Fashion Week Spring 2017 collection kept the dream alive with displays in saturated primary colors playing against stark black and white bases. The use of bold patterns and rich textures brought the collection to a higher level, once again confirming their place on the top is well deserved.

Full of playful dresses with interesting silhouettes, the collection represented a fun side of fashion that stays away from being too over-the-top (not something I can say about a lot of other collections). The hemlines rarely strayed above the knee, offering the coverage that many of us ladies prefer, but making up for the modest coverage were the rich colors, textures and asymmetrical hems. They used primary colors heavily in the collection featuring bright red and cobalt blue in many of the pieces, oft times color-blocked with black and/or white. Pops of yellow gave some of the looks an unexpected brightness and the ongoing trends of ruffles, stripes and knits also were featured in the collection.

Textures played a major role, giving most if not all of the looks a depth – as many of the pieces could have fallen flat had they relied solely on the color story. Intricate pleating in skirts, ostrich feathers peppering hemlines, the ever-popular rib knit and fur toppers added to the playfulness. One of my favorite things about the pieces is the subtle way the Proenza Schouler boys chose to bare skin. Knotted peephole openings on tops and dress bodices, and cutout shapes in the knitwear tops (think hearts and circles) gave us just the right amount of sexy without letting it all hang out for the world to see. In my opinion, that deserves the ultimate kudos!

Standout pieces were the geometric print black/white/blue and yellow knit dress with ostrich feather hem, the blue and red knotted peephole long sleeved dress, the black and white pleated silk dress with ruffle accents, and the red/yellow/black and white fur coat with over-sized collar.
