Sunday evening’s Prabal Gurung NYFW Fall 17 Collection truly offered something for every woman. In the program noted his collection is an “unabashed and unapologetic definition of femininity with a bite,” Women can pick and choose pieces from his collection, and feel confident to wear them. It was refreshing to see plus size models wearing this collection, giving many of us a better idea of how we may look in his pieces! Besides boxy coats and oversize knit sweaters many of the shapes were very reminiscent of the 80s. Ruffles, flutter sleeves, shirring, rouching, tiny covered buttons and loop trimmed slits on skirts, strong shouldered jackets with slouchy peg leg trousers strutted on pointy high heeled boots. There’s your bite!
Tights in white and strong monochrome colors with thin turtlenecks provided a base for layering thin fabric dresses, proving Prabal knows what women want! One more “biting” element was the noose style belt he used throughout the collection to roughen up some of the most feminine and ruffly pieces. One sour note (I had to say it) was the lemon yellow pieces that looked too much like a spring collection. However his use of colors like dusty blue and forest green in graphic prints and dark floral were fabulous.
My favorite pieces included the black power suit with floral asymmetric detail and noose style belt, the black and blue floral boxy jacket and pants, and the silver metallic dress with the side waist cutout… I cannot wear. Hmm, unless I can layer it over a thin turtleneck!
For the finale the models came out wearing T-shirts printed with sayings including “The future is female” “You can’t stop me” and Prabal Guring’s own T-shirt stated “This is what a feminist looks like.”
