Victoria Beckham is quickly becoming one of my favorite ready-to-wear designers (though I feel like I’m coming in a little late in the game) as she has been putting out incredibly well thought out and tailored collections for several years now. Her New York Fashion Week Spring 2017 collection was no exception as she took many of fashions trending moments, gave them a spin and made them completely something that I’m willing to give a shot (I’m looking at you 1990’s era crushed velvet).
I’m noticing a pattern in Beckham’s collections; her designs are becoming the antithesis of what her former personal style used to be. Bandage dresses and platform heels are her intended style legacy. Unstructured dresses, loose tops, midi length skirts and somewhat higher necklines were all present in her collection. One thing I noticed and totally appreciated about many of the looks is the silhouettes of the clothes could support the real woman’s body. The loose fits and lavish fabrics draped wonderfully on the models and additionally could drape beautifully on a woman with curves.
Her collection was rich in lavish fabrics like silks and crushed velvet with colors and prints that were playful but practical. Lilac, aqua, sienna and bright orange were the stand out colors with pieces in white, black, navy and tan that helped keep the collection cohesive and grounded. Florals and stripes provided some additional depth. Dresses made up a majority of the 34 look collection, showcasing details such as pleating, asymmetrical cuts, cold shoulder cut-outs and interesting tonal seam details. Corset-like bras and necklines were also prominent, making their way onto many of the dresses and in looks that showcased separates, incorporating the bra as a matching piece instead of an underpinning.
Some of my favorite looks in this collection were the crushed silk velvet lilac sleeveless dress, the white silk satin pants suit, and the tan wide leg pleat pants paired with the asymmetrical cut gold-tone top.
