Design duo Proenza Schouler rolled a playful and unexpected collection down the runway for SS16. Many of the looks incorporated the major trends that we are seeing for next season, like black and white, sheer, ruffles, fringe and even mesh. The collection definitely had a over-the-top opulence that left you smiling and wanting more.
Everything from the details to the silhouettes that set this collection apart. Midi-length straight dresses, separates and overcoats were scattered throughout the collection, including fun details like ribbons, ruffles, crop tops and asymmetrical hems, all adding to the theatrics of the collection. Cold shoulder tops, sexy necklines and high/low hemlines also were on full display. What made this collection memorable was each look had multiple eye-catching elements, whether it was mixed prints with layering, ruffles with mesh, or peplum and sheer. Every look managed to out-do the last.
The color story was subtle with black and white dominating the collection but incorporating small pops of red and Kelly green. This worked out perfectly to the collection’s advantage, as the simple selection of colors managed to add a subtly to the looks and served as a cohesive anchor. Lots of dimension soaked each piece, with bold prints and applique, large ruffles, fringe and eyelet details featured on the majority of the looks.
Overall the collection was very fun and whimsical and a stark contrast from some of the more serious looks we have seen on the runways this season. It definitely played to the young and vibrant fashion-lover ready to make a statement.
