Design duo Nicholas K have been a New York Fashion Week regular (usually on the first day) and their SS16 collection held true to their brand. “Urban Nomad” is the term that is thrown around most when describing their unique creations and this season did not disappoint.
Maintaining a clear direction and conviction to their aesthetic, their collection told a story of urban utilitarian meets the natural elements with a hint of post-apocalyptic future. Boasting a color story in hues of burnt sienna, gold, gray, black and white and sky blue that served almost as a neutral tone, the collection played with the idea of rough and tumble, sexy, strong and feminine all in one. The dip-dye technique used on many of the garments provided a depth that complimented the loose and flowing fit of many of the items, conveying a hard and soft story.
The pieces played not so much with layering as they did with the use of folds, tucks and creativity using excess fabric. Featuring garments with oversized hoods, utility belts and capes, silhouettes were unconfined to a single style with everything from full length, gauzy silk skirts to overalls, cropped pants and over-sized coats grazing the runway. Texture played a major role, with excess fabrics from the shirts, skirts and pants wrapped multiple times around the models to create additional dimension to the garments maintaining a playful, casual, and easy vibe.
This collection was very showy and though is was ready-to-wear, many of the pieces could be overly dramatic for day-to-day wear. However, the design, styling and sheer talent displayed here should be convincing enough for a fashion savant to seek out at least one of these pieces to add to their wardrobe for next season.
