Summary: For her Spring '10 collection and the debut of her new accessories line, Milly designer Michelle Smith chose a festive, youthful vibe with an uptown meets downtown chic. Smith claimed to pull from an 'Punky Meets Prep' aesthetic to style the collection, though I immediately thought 'Mod' as the first embellished swing jacket and rosy-tinted glasses appeared. The pieces truly seemed to channel a swinging 60's, London-like feel through the fitted, tank sheaths with oversized buttons and psychedelic patterns with blousy sleeves.
There were, however, parts of the collection that seemed a bit too heavy for fall. The color palette, for one, featured more autumnal colors like brown, orange, and mustard yellow. The widespread use of metallic jacquard, though lovely, also lent a chiller feel. And this collection was one of the first to offer such a diverse variety of spring jackets, ranging from cotton cloque to silk barkcloth. Although coming from the Midwest, I heartily welcome that as a staple piece to any spring wardrobe. The collection ended with a series of sleek, gauzy confections in black, bringing the fun but somewhat tepid collection back to a more modern realm.
