Runway To Real Way: Spring Forward with a Modern Take on Stripes!

Spring has sprung! And despite the gray skies and chilly temps, the calendar tells us that we can now begin to break free of the equally gloomy hues that have been dominating our wardrobes all winter long. Spring runways have been getting us excited for the coming season since way back in September, brimming with the splashy hues and vibrant patterns we can finally set our watches to. Spring forward with a modern take on stripes.

One of our favorites for Spring/Summer 2017 is the graphic artistry of stripes, one of the oldest patterns of them all. Using both both asymmetry and structure, and infusing a jolt of unexpected palettes, designers were able to breathe new life into a classic standby. Here, we’ve dug up some of our favorites we can start wearing now.

Multi-directional Stripes

What is fashion, if not art? Many collections this season seemed to take the term at face value as pieces boasted bold multi-directional stripes that rose and fell and blended into one another, like the runway at Proenza Schouler. We love the punchy pops of color paired with more understated neutrals, resulting in something decidedly modern art. For a simpler take that could be worn everyday, both layered or on it’s own, DVF provides a healthy dose of color blocking with a modest hem and sweet spaghetti-strapped neckline.

Vertical Stripes

It’s an undisputed fact that vertical stripes are known for their magical slimming properties. Pair them with an equally slimming black background and you’ve just gained four inches doing nothing at all. Carolina Herrera‘s feminine proportions and flattering silhouettes have kept the label on the map for decades, and their S/S’ 17 runway did not disappoint. We found the same crisp, clean look in the collection’s signature long lines and couldn’t wait to get our hands on the equally lengthening b+w maxi from Osklen, which looks worth every penny.

Veriegated Stripes

Despite the trade secret that vertical lines lengthen, it’s actually a myth that horizontal lines widen. Both thick and chunky, as seen at Delpozo, or tiny and precise, as we found on Opening Ceremony, horizontal lines can be just as flattering. The color blocking on the latter makes this a subtly statement-making piece that can have you turning heads from now until the first genuinely warm day which, who knows, could still be months away.

Sailor Stripes

And speaking of warmth and the onset of summer, nautical looks are set to drop anchor in a big way this year. Always a fun and flirty nod to summer trends, nautical-inspired stripes are an easy, breezy way to enjoy the trend with going “overboard”. Altuzarra‘s red and white stripes channeled a little sea-worthy envy in us, so we found a suitable and affordable alternative from designer Kirna Zabete. Fresh and fun, this striped little number can be tossed on for pretty much any occasion and is worth it’s weight in buried treasure. Scoop up a few of these striped pieces to put a spring in your step this season!
