Fashion’s biggest night is back with a vengeance and it’s not a virtual red carpet! Not that anyone could have imagined a virtual Met Gala, nor would Anna Wintour have let that happen. But in a time of coronavirus, glamour, elegance, and going all out for the red carpet are not to be taken for granted. Plus, it seems like the celebs have a desire to dress up and get out more than ever before as pretty much everyone who is anyone in young trendy Hollywood right now was seen climbing the stairs of the Metropolitan Museum of Art for the ball. I’m talking Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna, Megan Fox, and more. The looks were as cool and as weird as ever and the event certainly did not disappoint. We found the best, the worst and the most boring Met Gala 2021 fashion!
Met Gala 2021 Fashion
The annual fundraising benefit for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City welcomes the biggest celebrities to their gala every year, just as The Costume Institute puts out its exhibition highlighting the theme of the event. This year, the gala is highlighted by the spectacular theme of American fashion with “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion” and “In America: An Anthology of Fashion” showcasing as exhibits in the costume center in 2021 and 2022.
The stars and the designers who created their looks were unique in the way they interpreted American fashion. Stars like Emily Blunt and Lorde wore headpieces that looked like the one worn by Lady Liberty. Stars like Lupita N’yongo and Korean rapper CL did it up in denim looks. Other stars like Megan Fox and Tracee Ellis Ross wowed in red, white, and blue, and some wore all three colors at the same time (Debbie Harry). Some, like Jennifer Lopez and Kacey Musgraves wore cowboy-inspired looks while others wore American designers like Tommy Hilfiger and Ralph Lauren.
And then there were some, like Kim Kardashian and Rihanna, whose looks didn’t seem to fit the theme at all. Still, they did make a statement, which I guess at the end of the day is what the Met Gala is all about.
The Knockouts: The Best Met Gala 2021 Fashion
People were saying they didn’t really GET Kim Kardashian’s look — that it didn’t scream Americana. But then, she’s wearing a t-shirt isn’t she? And didn’t Americans invent the t-shirt?
There’s a lot about this look that’s so purely Jennifer and yet, I didn’t see a whole lot of other American cowboys on the red carpet this year.
Lil Nas X pulled a Lady Gaga and struck a pose in three standout looks on the red carpet, taking off his thick royalty-inspired coat to reveal a gold superhero costume and a sequined one piece.
Yes! Dan Levy killed it, and somehow, there’s a sense of following the theme somewhere in all of that global gaudiness.
Yes, I just think it’s the best Billie Eilish has ever looked. Enough with the grunge, glamour works for you, darling!
Oh say can you see? Debbie Harry was one of the few celebs that followed the theme perfectly and so I had to include her as a knockout. But there’s nowhere else you can wear a look like this!
Yes, this look was a bit crazy, but certainly not boring. I also thought we were going to see a lot more masks on the red carpet. And we totally didn’t!
Many of the top stars like Tracee Ellis Ross wore Balenciaga. Coincidence? I think not.
Wow, Kalin Gerber is just as stunning as her mother.
These celebrities followed this year’s theme.
True, this would probably go into the Worst Dressed category but I like that she went for it American-style!
I expected a bit more from these celebs. They totally disappointed. Sure, they look nice, but this is fashion’s biggest night of the year!!
Beautiful dress but this is a look Mary J would wear at any event.
The Worst Dressed at the Met Gala 2021
How in the world can this be Valentino? Seriously. On what planet?
Everyone was talking about how amazing it was that Simone Biles’ dress had more than 80lbs of crystal on it, but I just thought it looked like one hot mess.
Suddenly all the models (Irina Shayk, Jasmine Tookes, Joan Smalls) had cropped hairdos. Was that on purpose?
Tax the rich. OK, way to make a political statement on the red carpet Alexandria! You’re no Kim Kardashian!
I love Diane Kruger, but this was just plain ugly! Also, what’s up with her makeup?
Zoe Kravitz is gorgeous, but this is not her best look.
Who do you think was the best or worst dressed at the Met Gala 2021?
