How to Style a Maxi Skirt Outfit for Winter and Spring

We’ve all been wearing a lot of athleisure and lounge wear lately, and with spring right around the corner, I am starting to think about venturing out into the world more and wearing something other than leggings! I love a showstopping maxi skirt, but it can be tricky to style for both cold and warm weather since early springtime weather can be all over the place. But I’ve got it covered! Here’s how to style a maxi skirt outfit to wear from winter to spring.

Elegant, Pleated Maxi Skirt

I am in love with this gorgeous pleated maxi skirt from Amazon! It’s flattering for many body types and the tie front makes it look a lot more upscale than it actually is. This affordable skirt is also available in khaki, wine red, yellow and light blue, which makes it tempting to buy in multiple colors. The skirt would be perfect for many occasions in the future, including going to the office, dinners with family, strolling in another city on vacation or brunch with friends. It makes me excited for the world to open up again. Fingers crossed! This skirt especially reminds me of vacation because it’s reminiscent of Audrey Hepburn’s wardrobe in Roman Holiday. It is similar to the skirt she’s wearing on the vintage movie poster I got in Rome that’s currently hanging in my kitchen.

Classic Linen Button Down Shirt

A linen button down-shirt is always a worthwhile investment. You can wear it all spring, summer and into the fall season. Uniqlo is a wonderful place to buy quality, classic pieces, and this affordable linen shirt would pair well tucked into the maxi skirt from Amazon. This button down is available in eight colors, so you’re bound to find one that works well with your wardrobe and skin tone.

Cozy Pointelle Sweater

If I were to wear the maxi skirt and button down now, I would throw this pretty pointelle Target sweater on top! I love the pattern and it looks very cozy, plus Target is my go-to place to buy sweaters. This sweater comes in a blush color and a bright, multi colored version that would pair well with jeans.

Versatile Opaque Tights

Tights are a must while wearing a skirt in late winter! These opaque control top tights from Nordstrom would work well with this maxi skirt look.

Block Heel Patent Ankle Boots

These sophisticated patent booties from ASOS are a beautiful wine color! I really like the pointed toe and the fact that these have a block heel, which makes it a lot easier to walk. I personally always go for heels like this, since I live downtown and am a fast walker. These booties would provide an amazing pop of color to this maxi skirt look!

Tee Shirts for Spring

Let’s pretend it’s now warm and sometime in May, and you’re wanting to wear this maxi skirt you purchased on Amazon to grab some drinks outside on the patio with friends. Old Navy has some everyday tee shirts that will work for this new outfit. They have a flattering v-neck and are simple enough not to complete visually with the skirt. You’ll get lots of use out of these, as they’re a summer wardrobe staple too.

Chic Buckle Detail Mules

These buckle detail high heeled mules from ASOS would work perfectly with this version of the outfit! I love the unexpected color and the fun, oversized buckle. The straps are adjustable and the heel is wide, so they should be comfortable to walk in.

Fun Round Sunglasses

If you’re in the market for a pair of inexpensive sunglasses (that don’t look inexpensive) so you won’t stress about throwing them into your bag and potentially getting them scratched at the beach this summer, this round pair from Urban Outfitters is perfect. I think the brown tortoiseshell looks the most expensive, and they also come in black, green, yellow and beige tortoiseshell.

Tips for Styling Early Spring Outfits

  • You can wear your maxi or midi skirts in chilly weather, simply wear with a pair of opaque tights.
  • Booties are versatile and perfect for spring! You can wear them with pants, skinny jeans, maxi skirts and dresses.
  • Layering is key! Button down shirts and sweaters are ideal for looking polished in winter weather, and a simple tee shirt lets a maxi skirt be the star of the show in spring.
