Rediscover The Masculine Overcoat

Will it truly matter if the groundhog sees his shadow today? This winter has been particularly mild! I just pray this post doesn’t jinx this climate change because I have been able to enjoy one of my favorite coat styles long past fall. I’m talking about the Masculine Overcoat which typically spends the majority of the winter in the back of my closet as I tend to favor chose warmer fabrics like down and shearling in order to combat freezing cold weather.

When I was in high school I used to troll second hand stores looking for perfect men’s wool or cashmere coats because they just didn’t make the style for women back in those days and it was cooler to borrow from the boys. I would roll up the sleeves, ignore the fact the shoulders were massive, add a rhinestone pin (yes, it was the 80’s) and away I would go. Today it’s easy to find a mannish styled coat and the added bonus is they are made to fit women yet are still oversized.

Pair your menswear overcoat with tees and tailored pants or with your favorite boyfriend jeans cuffed with pointy toe stilettos. We love the contrast of masculine with feminine touches peeking out. Sometimes I even wear a leather belt over my longer menswear coats to give myself a waist. Wearing it open with a scarf works too. You really can’t go wrong with a menswear coat…unless you borrow it from your man.

Here are some menswear overcoats still available at various price points:
