Looks For Less: Velvety Holiday Handbags

There’s no doubt velvet is trending these days, especially with the 90’s trends coming back (for better, but often for worse). Luckily this trend is for better, and just in time for the holiday season. Velvet pants are very chic on a lot of women, but may not be for everyone (including me – I’m too short to pull them off). Also, velvet dresses tend to look like a figure skating costume on me. So what’s a girl to do? Invest in one (or all five) velvet bags!

I always associate autumn with buying a new bag, so why not spice things up a bit with a velvet version? Coordinating and contrasting a new bag with boots and scarves is always fun, and you need something to carry your iPhone and lipstick at the upcoming holiday soirees you’ll attend. I’ve found velvet bags can be dressed up or down, and look amazing no matter if you’re wearing relaxed jeans and a button down, or a cocktail dress with tights and pumps. They are very versatile and can subtly blend in and add texture to your ensemble, or be the statement piece and main focus of your otherwise understated outfit.

This stunner from Anthropologie has gorgeous gilded age vibes, and in my opinion is definitely worth splurging on a little. It will be a great statement bag for years to come and it is very festive. The bag from River Island is affordable and especially elegant for the price. It’s the ideal cold weather everyday handbag. The elegant backpack from Topshop is perfect for the sporty woman who is into hands-free commutes and needs to schlep a lot around (who doesn’t?). The crossbody bag from ASOS and the small bag from Target are ideal for holiday parties where you need to have your hands free to mingle, take photos and nosh on delicious appetizers. Oh, and of course hold that bubbly! The beautiful beading on the Target clutch is unexpected.

In case you were wondering, the history of velvet is complicated. There are several theories as to how and where the textile was invented. The Renaissance was a profitable time for velvet production, however its origin was likely originated from Eastern culture. Once the Europeans discovered its beauty, it was often traded along the Silk Road. It was also popular during the Industrial Revolution and in the Roaring 20’s in the fashion trends during that era.

Get ready for the holiday craziness and shop the picks below for statement bags and carryalls that also remain classic and sophisticated, and are easily styled any way you like. Plus, they won’t break the bank so you’ll have plenty of money left over to get everyone a fabulous gift. Cheers to that!
