At this time of year, many women fret over what exactly to wear to big public charity galas and private holiday events. I thought I’d take a moment to give a primer on the LBD using the latest offerings from Saks Fifth Avenue to illustrate my point.
The deep V gown is probably already your go-to if your neck and poitrine are your best feature. This season, ABS offers a plunging V Goddess gown with the subtlest flare at the floor length hem. This is sure to be your new favorite, but you’ll probably need a wrap – or maybe a chinchilla chubby – to get you where you’re going, unless you want to literally stop traffic!
Speaking of the cold shoulder, the one-shoulder gown has become a staple of formal events all over the country. Herve Leger – famous for his skin tight bandage dresses – loosens up a little this season with a one-shoulder gown with a fringe skirt. Although you’re sure to encounter lots of short LBDs with beaded fringe this season, you’ll be the standout with this carwash fringe. This is how you make an entrance – or a dramatic Cinderella style departure!

If one bare shoulder just isn’t enough, opt for this Elizabeth and James off-the-shoulder gown. The classic T-shaped gown is the very definition of statuesque. This is a gown that won’t have you worrying as you dance the night away or slip into a cozy booth for a bit of champers. Think of it as an insurance policy against a wardrobe malfunction!
If you’re feeling more daring, then the strapless dress is for you. Wolford’s ankle-length Fatal strapless gown will become as essential a part of your evening wardrobe as their cashmere footless tights were to many a fashion editor – myself included. You’ll be the envy of all when you step out on the town in this look. The shorter length means you don’t have to worry about any “gown-stepping” mean girls.
