Karl Lagerfeld And The Celebrities Who Wore Him

“Chic is a kind of mayonnaise, either it tastes, or it doesn’t.”

Yes, that was the iconic Karl Lagerfeld – the sort of man who wore monochrome black and white to every major event, but also said sweatpants “are a sign of defeat.” The legendary designer of Chanel and Fendi among other labels, including one bearing his own name, was always as smart as he was outrageous.

Although he was already 85 years old, and suffered from ill health, the fashion world is still reeling from the shock; we were all hoping deep down he would live forever. But alas, it is only his incredible, theatrical, and intricate designs for some of the most famous fashion houses in the world that will carry on his vision.

Celebrities, designers, models and editors have come out of the woodwork to pay tribute to the designer. He earned high praise from A-listers like Diane Kruger, Julianne Moore, Keira Knightley, Victoria Beckham, Marion Cotillard, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kim Kardashian, Beyonce and many more.

When she won Best Actress in a Leading Role at Academy Awards in 2015, Julianne Moore was wearing Chanel. Later that year, she also walked for a Chanel couture runway.

Ironically, Karl himself wore Tom Ford to the 2011 Met Gala, but he posed with Blake Lively who donned one of his designs.

Also in 2015, Sarah Jessica Parker, an avid Karl fan, made an appearance for the opening of a Fendi store on Madison Avenue in New York City. Most recently, she appeared in a Fendi commercial for their re-released “baguette” bag and while he was already in poor health at the time, I’m sure Mr. Lagerfeld had something to do with it.

Lagerfeld, who began his somewhat controversial career under the auspices of Pierre Balmain in the ’50s, was one of a kind. Not even Coco Chanel could compete. “What I’ve done Coco Chanel would never have done,”he once said, “She would have hated it.”

But nevertheless, scores of celebs ate it up.

Even First Lady Melania Trump paid tribute to the phenomenal designer. She showcased a picture of him with her on the red carpet in 2004 and also one of her  first official White House appearances in 2017 where she wore a white skirt suit designed by Lagerfeld to greet the Israeli Prime Minister at the White House.

Perhaps the greatest celeb of all that really knew Karl Lagerfeld? His luxe white cat Choupette. The kitty had his own social media account for crying out loud!

Karl Lagerfeld adored his Birman breed cat so much so that he told CNN  “There is no marriage, yet, for human beings and animals… I never thought I would fall in love like this with a cat.” Um what? OK. It’s Karl Lagerfeld, after all.

Eventually, she had her own Instagram account, a personal chef, two maids, a bodyguard, and a book based on her called “Choupette: The Private Life of a High-Flying Fashion Cat.”. Karl even designed a fashion collection around her and his label Chanel had a couture collection inspired by her eyes.

The media is also reporting that there’s a good chance the cat will inherit Lagerfeld’s million dollar fortune! Not bad, Choupette. Not bad.
