Oversize It! How To Wear The Oversized Trend

If you follow pretty much any celebrity fashion or news site, you’ve probably noticed that there’s no shortage of beautiful women with great figures wearing oversized or downright baggy tops, dresses, and pants. But what looks adorable on a skinny teenager can look unflattering or even sloppy on those of us who are older than say, nineteen. You may be wondering how to wear the oversized trend.

There’s definitely a way to do the oversized look right! Plus it’s extremely comfortable,  breezy and perfect for hot summer days.

Do It In Linen

Wide leg linen pants are a summer classic, and for good reason – nothing else keeps you quite as cool, with the added bonus of sun protection. We love these denim-esque wide leg pants from Nic + Zoe.

Keep Proportions In Mind

The best way for most of us to do oversize is to stick with one voluminous piece per outfit, and make the rest of it relatively fitted. This graphic print Proenza Schouler jersey top looks amazing with black skinny pants, or flip the proportions with these striped Ann Demeulemeester pants and a close-fitting black tank or tee.

Prints And Patterns

Bold prints make an amazing statement when they’re also oversized. This look isn’t for wallflowers but it can be a surprisingly flattering way to wear serious patterns because it’s not body hugging. For instance, this Free People tunic would look really different and probably inappropriate for most of us if it was body-con, but it’s fabulously bohemian and comfortable because it’s purposefully oversized.

It’s All About The Drape

The right fabric matters when you’re going for volume; just think about how different the same silhouette would look in stiff cotton versus flowy silk or rayon, for example. And an easy way to try the trend is to size up in a button-down done in the aforementioned materials, like these classic and inexpensive Uniqlo shirts, which look awesome worn loose over shorts or leggings as well as tucked into more tailored bottoms.

The takeaway for all of this is that the oversized trend is surprisingly wearable and perfect for summer, so why not give it a try!
