How To Rock Patterned Pants This Summer

Yep, it’s about 92 degrees outside and I’m standing in my closet in a panic. What am I am I going to wear? I no longer feel comfortable in my rompers and my shorts are still packed away and may be headed for donation. I have a lot of midi skirts and dresses which I wear to death and people must think I live in them and It’s too hot for jeans. So I am going to try something new for me that’s on trend and new for me this season: patterned pants. I’m in that sort of mood. I want to stand apart from the crowd.

The preferred patterned pants for hot summer days and nights are either cropped or long and flowing (yes like – gulp – the palazzo pants we wore in the 90’s). This is the prefect trend for women in their 40’s who no longer feel comfortable wearing shorts yet still want to make a statement. After all we want to look hot, not be hot.

Personally I’m into the giant colorful floral prints that are everywhere but bold stripes, batik prints and animal prints works well too.

HOW TO WEAR PATTERNED PANTS

If you are tall and are blessed with long legs stick with a slimmer fit so you don’t look like a ton of fabric. Also consider keeping the rest of your outfit simple so the pants are the main focus. A plain fitted tee, sleek jewelry and unfussy sandals will create the prefect balance.

If you are petite you might want to wear a fitted style of patterned pants with a flouncy top to draw the eye up and away from your your legs. It will create the illusion you are taller…along with high heeled footwear (stick with a stiletto type pump and not a chunky shoe). Wear a bold necklace and add earrings too. That way your top will be in balance with your bottom.

If you are curvy opt for a larger floral print pant and if you are comfortable pattern-mixing try adding a vertical stripe off-the-shoulder top or a plain crisp cotton shirt that falls just past the waist. Have fun with your bag and carry a straw tote with pom poms which is all the rage this season. Stilettos will give you that balance you seek.

If you are a stick (I envy you) think about a wide leg patterned pant and a top that either matches the pattern (yes head-to-toe print) or has some sort of flounce to give you the illusion of curves ahead. I’d also recommend going all out on the accessories when it comes to necklaces and earrings.

If you have a large chest but are smaller on the bottom (like me), go for a fitted cropped pair of patterned pants and a simple top that is fitted and tucks in. Nothing makes a busty women look bustier than a flouncy top. Keep the necklaces and earrings to minimum to keep the eyes anywhere but on your chest. A patterned clutch and simple sandals will also serve you well.
