How To Wear A Pant Suit The Modern Way When You’re Over 40

We keep hearing about the pantsuit making a comeback and have seen it on the runways for the last few seasons but how do you practically wear one? Here’s a fresh new way to wear a tailored jacket and pant without looking stuffy. I was totally inspired by this look from Theory, where they show a conservative lightweight wool suit worn over a thin but not too tight turtleneck sweater with laceless white leather sneakers. This look is perfectly appropriate for women over 40, and it solves the dilemma of how to wear a pant suit the modern way.

Get The Look

The beauty of this trend is you can buy the jacket and pants separately in the right sizes to compliment your body type. I recommend slim trouser style pants that are somewhat cropped with a fitted blazer that is slightly oversized in a dark grey, black or navy.

Of course you can wear these two pieces again and again. The jacket can be worn with jeans, skirts, dresses or other pants and the pants can be matched with other colorful tops and jackets in leathers, patterns, textures and tweeds. If you haven’t purchased a new suit lately, isn’t it about time you did?

Make It Modern

What makes this look modern is the ease of a turtleneck (instead of an oxford shirt) and the comfort of sneakers! You will look professional, on-trend and ready to work all day. Try different textures and ribbing for the turtleneck. I’m showing the sweater in gray because is a perfect neutral but don’t be afraid to try a bright color like red or cobalt, or sporty stripes or graphic patterns.

For the sneakers, stick to laceless styles to make the overall look sleeker and perhaps a bit dressier. Besides with slipons you will save time getting ready. Who has time to tie their shoes?

Shop High Low

The beauty of high low fashion is you can spend a little or a lot to get the same look. Make an investment in a suit from Theory or save at Banana Republic but no matter how much you spend, be sure to get the proper fit. If you need to take your suit to a tailor then do so. Purchase a good quality sweater with interesting detail from Shopbop, or save a bundle on a top from ASOS. And where you go (high or low) regarding the shoes, is up to you!
