Some of the trickiest outfits to put together are often for events that you are the most excited to attend. The perfect example of such an event is a cocktail party. What to wear can actually become a dilemma. You would think it would be fun to put together a cocktail party outfit and you may already have something in your closet to wear. But when you go to try it on it looks dated, uncomfortable or possibly too dressy. Now what?

The Metallic Blouse

Start with a beautiful blouse! Blouses have become my friend because they skim the body and can be worn over the hips to hide a multitude of sins. You can wear it tunic style, tucked in or belted. A metallic blouse is a elegant piece that can go from black tie to a rock concert so it is the perfect top to start off your cocktail party look. This gorgeous blouse from Michael Kors is certainly worth the investment but you can save a lot with this ASOS metallic blouse.

The Black Leather Skinny Pants

Black leather adds a touch of luxury to this cocktail party look. Besides you need a pair of black leather skinny pants if you don’t already own them to update your wardrobe. These J Brand leather pants are devine with high waisted styling and side button details. What? You don’t want to spend a thousand dollars? Then you’ll love these Spanx faux leather leggings for $98. They suck you in for a super flattering fit and are comfortable, too.

The Black Suede Mule

There is black and then there is the deepest richest black you can get from suede. Black suede mules add texture and modern styling to this outfit. I don’t always like pumps with skinny pants for women over 40 (they can look tacky) but mules with skinny pants add a bit of sophistication and they are more comfortable than pumps too!

These Roger Vivier mules are absolutely stunning and worthy of collecting, but you can get these suede mules from Vince Camuto for a whole lot less.

The Color Block Handbag

Don’t be afraid to add color to your gold and black cocktail party outfit! I fell in love with this Chloe color block ombre patent leather handbag. It even has my initial on it! I know it’s a far cry from the designer bag but but you can get a similar color block effect with this ASOS bag for only $26.
