How To Master The Neon Trend When You’re Over 40

This month starts the long stretch of the winter blues. The holidays are over and all we have to look forward to is cold weather; sometimes with seemingly no end in sight. Those days that we get sunshine are a faint glimmer of hope for the warmer weather that will eventually come. My solution for the lack of sunshine is to create it with color. This month, the trend I want to focus on is bright, fun and not-to-be taken-too-seriously: neon!

The Neon Trend

I completely understand if you don’t want to relive the 80s and 90s in all of its glory, but there is something about the resurgence of the bright neon colors trend that makes me want to jump on board. The silhouettes are now much more flattering. Also, the thought of getting away from some of my boring, stuffy, cold weather work wear makes getting dressed for the day much more appealing. Runway designers from Versace, Carolina Herrera, Christian Siriano and Prabal Gurung lead the fleet in presenting bright neon purples, greens, oranges and pinks o the runway. No article of clothing was spared. Tops, bottoms, dresses, shoes, handbags and hats all got the neon treatment.

How To Wear Bright Neon Colors

For women over 40, as much as you may want to think it, this trend is not off-limits. By all means, reminisce in your teen and early adulthood heyday, just keep it simple and wear just one piece at a time. One of my favorite labels, Helmut Lang, makes this gorgeous neon ribbed sweater that I would style with my dark wash jeans and a pair of black riding boots. I’d top it with a fur vest for a polished and fun look. Bonus points for the thumbholes that add a sporty vibe.

If you don’t want to commit fully to an article of clothing, accessorizing with neon is just as fun. I love these BaubleBar Contessa Earrings or this Marni Wristlet, paired with a chunky ivory sweater and wide leg slacks for an daytime office and evening happy hour look. Take a look at some other options for the neon trend below!
