The 78th Golden Globes Fashion Best Dressed and The Questionable

The 78th annual Golden Globes Awards was an award show unlike any we’ve ever experienced in our lifetime. We are happy we were able to report on the Golden Globes Fashion 2021 from the best to the worst dressed.

The 78th Golden Globes

With a year of the COVID-19 pandemic under our belt, we’re more aware of how to handle the ongoing health situation, but much of the world is not at a point yet where they can safely congregate for mass events. Instead, Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) put together an experience – in what CNN called a “pandemic-dictated” format – but not all went off without a hitch. There was, of course, the hard-hitting monologue by hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler from two different cities, the controversy of a lack of inclusivity in the HFPA, and Daniel Kaluuya’s impressive reaction to being muted during his acceptance speech as he took the award for best supporting actor in a motion picture.

Golden Globes Fashion 2021

Fashion, for its part, was spot on, whether it was on Instagram, on video, or in somebody’s living room. We saw some trends make their way back on to the “virtual red carpet” that we haven’t seen in quite some time, and certainly not at the Golden Globes – pantsuits, mini-dresses, and tuxedo blazers were part of the somewhat questionable fashion this evening.

And while not every fashion photo was from the best angle or of the best quality, the celebs did try to give their fans something to remember them by when they posted in their gowns and look. (Of course, I’m still waiting for a better picture of Catherine O’Hara’s incredible Vera Wang suit.)

Golden Globes Best Dressed 2021

Here are some of the best looks and the trends that stood out the most:

Favorite look of the night! While the emerald green gown stands out on its own, it’s the additional draped coat in the same coat that does it for me with this look.

Regina King in Louis Vuitton

Actress and director Regina King made a stunning appearance at the Golden Globes in an embroidered Louis Vuitton number that included 20,000 silver sequins, 12,000 golden sequins, and 8,000 black sequins, as well as over 1,200 crystals. While the director didn’t win in her category for “One Night in Miami,” she certainly made a statement on the virtual red carpet.

Maria Bakalova in Armani Prive

Maria Bakalova, Bulgarian star of Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, wanted to make sure her first Golden Globe nomination ever was super memorable and she did it in the best way possible — with a stunning, extravagant look fit for a princess. I almost wish this fuchsia tulle and faille strapless gown had made a real appearance on an actual red carpet.

Cynthia Erivo

Cynthia Erivo in Valentino

The first thing I thought when I saw Cynthia Erivo’s statement-making green Valentino look was, “This is Valentino?!” I guess I once had this view of Valentino being romantic, frothy, flowery, and this gown is the complete opposite of all of that. But that doesn’t mean it’s bad. In fact, its unique choice of color, its architectural design, and its power are what make it one of the night’s most talked-about pieces.

Sofia Carson in Giambattisa Valli

Jamie Lee Curtis

I know it’s bright yellow, but I thought Jamie Lee Curtis looks stunning. And it shows that a beautiful woman in her 60s can pull off color!

Andra Day in Chanel

Some said they didn’t like the color of this Giambattista Valli gown, others said Sofia Carson’s hairstyle made her look old. Well, I loved this look. In a time where so many celebrities were experimenting with what I thought were more casual, dressed down looks — minidresses, blazers, and the like — Sofia brings glam, Old Hollywood back to the red carpet.

Some other statement looks of the night included:

Golden Globes Trends 2021

Trends like prints, mini-dresses, and pantsuits with blazers with the standout trends of the evening, but not something I’ve come to expect at the Golden Globes. Still, it was an interesting surprise. How did you feel about it?

True to her word to efforts in sustainability, Jane Fonda re-wore a cream-colored suit by Richard Tyler.

Golden Globes Worst Dressed 2021

Tiffany Haddish in Alberta Ferretti

Don’t hate me for putting this in the Worst Dressed category. Tiffany Haddish’s disco ball look was borderline. Some people loved it, some people (like me) hated it, but it certainly made the rounds as one of the most talked-about looks of the night.

Gillian Anderson in Christian Dior

Not sure if you will agree, but I hated this dress.

Kyra Sedgwick in Marina Moscone
Rosemund Pike in Molly Goddard
Bryce Dallas Howard in Temperley London
Maya Rudolph in Valentino
