Get There Now: Tulum, Mexico

If you are reading this, you are probably familiar with my fashion column – Get It Now (ten years going strong!), but I’m also a travel writer, so with the new incarnation or update of Second City Style, it is time to “Get There Now” here on Fountain Of 30! Our first feature is Get There Now: Tulum, Mexico – the perfect destination for the fashionista hippie who wants to relax and unplug, but still enjoy a luxurious trip.

Who: Go with anyone! Tulum can be a romantic honeymoon or similar type of vacation for couples, it can be a hippie-style yoga escape, or a great family destination (especially if your kids are old enough to snorkel, swim, and climb around the ruins).

What to do: Explore the Mayan ruins at Tulum and Coba, relax on the gorgeous beaches, check out the surreal landscapes and tropical wildlife at the Si’an Kaan biosphere, rent an ATV and cruise through the jungle, do yoga or other workouts poolside or on the beach, explore the cenotes, get classic Mayan spa treatments, and swim, scuba, snorkel and jet ski to your heart’s content.

What To Eat: There’s plenty of classic (and delicious) Mexican food and tequila! We recommend Mexican-Thai fusion at Mezzanine, Raw Love Cafe in the Ahau hotel, and basically any tacos al pastor you can get your hands on. There are plenty of healthy options, including vegan, vegetarian, and gluten free choices, and you should definitely have at least one smoothie or freshly blended juice made from local fruit. And don’t skip the margaritas!

What To Buy: Jewelry (.925 silver is pretty affordable, especially with the dollar being so strong), yoga gear, and various Mayan style carvings and blankets. Granted, some of the souvenirs are a little cheesy, but isn’t that the case everywhere?

What To Wear: You don’t really need much beyond a couple stylish swimsuits, a few maxi dresses, and some shorts and tank tops along with sturdy sneakers or hiking boots for the ruins. And plenty of sunscreen, of course!

Where: Tulum, Punta Allen, Si’an Kaan and Playa Del Carmen in state of Quintana Roo, Mexico. We’re fans of Coqui Coqui, the aforementioned Ahau, and Pavo Real, but there are plenty of awesome options. Keep in mind that some hotels don’t have electricity at night and plumbing can be questionable…so decide what matters to you in that regard.

Why: It’s a relatively easy flight from most parts of the U.S., the white sand beaches are undeniably gorgeous, and learning about Mayan culture and history is fascinating. Plus, the yoga retreats and spas will make sure that your vacation leaves you feeling refreshed, relaxed, and ready to conquer the world.

How: Fly into Cancun and then either rent a car or take a collectivo bus down to Tulum. You don’t need your own vehicle (cabs are cheap and plentiful), but it can be convenient.

If you decide to head south of the border, let us know – share your stories, recommendations, and of course, what you wore.
