How to Style The Latest Faux Leather With Neutrals

A classic winter trend that is back in the spotlight is leather, and this includes faux or vegan leather. This is an option if you have ethical concerns about wearing real leather, or if you are looking to save money on fashion trends. Faux leather is a great way to go when it comes to finding looks for less. I like to balance out the look and keep it sophisticated by styling the leather pieces and accessories with neutral items, like a cozy beige or camel colored sweater. Here’s how to style leather, vegan or faux leather with neutrals for winter.

What is Faux Leather?

Faux leather, also called synthetic or artificial leather, has a leather-like finish and is usually made from polyurethane, a polymer. It’s man made and cruelty free.

What is Vegan Leather?

Vegan leather is basically the same thing as faux leather. It’s high quality faux leather that remains safe and cruelty free. It could be made from polyurethane, or it could be made from sustainable and innovative materials such as recycled plastic, cork, pineapple leaves, apple peels or other fruit waste.

Classic Leather Jacket

A classic leather jacket never goes out of style and can (and should!) be worn year after year. You can get good deals on fashionable faux leather jackets, but I found this one in real leather on sale. Usually a jacket like this is a real investment, but this Barneys Originals jacket from ASOS is affordable at only $114, and will give you a great cost-per-wear ratio. It can be styled with neutrals, denim or to balance out a floral print look. This textured leather moto-jacket features an asymmetrical zip fastening, quilted stitched sleeves and real pockets. If you prefer to go faux, ASOS offers many similar styles such as this Only Faux Leather Biker Jacket for only $67.

Flattering Faux Leather Pants

Faux leather pants don’t always have to fit the stereotype of being super skintight and unflattering. This pair of faux leather trousers from Mango are flattering and come in two colors, black and beige. Their cropped and relaxed fit make them an ideal piece to dress up or down. Wear them from the office to drinks with heels and on the weekend with sneakers.

Faux Leather Skirt

This fitted, faux leather skirt from Nordstrom would be perfect for the office or for a night out. Its exposed back zipper and sleek silhouette make it a great piece to mix and match with different tops. Any top would work from sweaters, button downs, blouses to even a tee shirt.

Vegan Leather Bag

This vegan crossbody leather bag from Anthropologie comes in two colors, black and cocoa. I love the interesting detailed, braided strap, but you can even buy another strap for it if you want to switch it up and have an embroidered floral or geometric print instead. This elegant bag is a bargain and definitely looks more expensive than its price.

Slouchy, Soft Knit Sweaters

I’m a huge fan of pairing leather pieces with cozy, neutral pieces for winter. Knit sweaters soften the contrast of the slickness of leather. This soft knit sweater from H&M comes in two colors, beige and blue, and would be ideal paired with any of these pieces. Another sweater that would pair well with leather is this chic camel colored sweater from Topshop. This slouchy pullover features a classic crewneck and a roomy fit. It also comes in an oatmeal color.

  1. I just called a faux leather jacket out of the back of my closet the other day. I was going back-and-forth in regards to what to do with it. Should I give it to a friend, donated or what. Thanks for this great post, I think I will definitely be keeping it and trying it out with some new outfits.

  2. I love leather but to me the key is that less is more. I will wear some of the faux leather, but I’m very picky about the look, some of it looks like you’re wearing (or carrying) a trash bag. You’ve included some interesting options, worth checking out.
