Fashion Through The Ages: What Exactly Did We Wear In The 90s?

The 90s are back in fashion! But what exactly were the trends of the 90s? Perhaps that era is a bit of a blur because a great deal of minimalism (and grunge) came into play and some of the same pieces have probably kept a place in your fashion wardrobe to this day.

Think of sleek simple pieces (like Sprockets on Saturday Night Live!). Who doesn’t own a black turtleneck? There was a uniform in Chicago in the 90s: A black turtleneck or white shirt, leather jacket, highwaist straight leg jeans and black block heeled boots. I recall another easy trend for summer was a simple jean skirt with slim white T-shirt or a cropped top. We adored Kenneth Cole, DKNY and Calvin Klein for sleek pieces in black and white, with an occasional burst of hot color. Stretch and techie fabrics were becoming popular and no longer taboo (polyester re-branded) because they kept their shape. If we went for vintage we sought out sleek 60s LBDs and men’s (or boys) simple unbelted trench coats. The big look of the 80s was out and the 90s look was anything that fit closer to the body.

90s inspired details you will find for this spring season include menswear fabrics and shapes, raw edges, cropped trousers, higher waist jeans, wider leg pants, bucket bags, A-line skirts and slide loafers and sandals also known as mules.

The 90s were so minimalist, I almost forgot what we wore! Do you really remember what they wore on Friends? Nothing (except Rachel’s hair) really stood out, but maybe that’s a good thing. As you see fashion trending towards higher waists on pants and shirts and shorter jacks and tops, that’s where we are going back to the 90s! The good news is you may already have some of these pieces in your closet. Keep it simple!
