Essential Spring Rainwear That Will Brighten Your Days

Winter is nearly over in most parts of the world (or at least in the Northern Hemisphere) and we are thinking spring. Bright pastels, candy colors, and lighter-weight clothing are all in order this time of the year – and after the previous year we’ve had, why wouldn’t you want to celebrate the light at the end of the tunnel with happy colors that echo the spring flowers that are starting to pop up? April showers will be coming soon, and there’s nothing better than putting away your heavy winter coats, hats, gloves, and scarves in favor of cheerful and light jackets, umbrellas, rain boots, and ponchos in fun prints and colors, and other spring rainwear that livens up even the cloudiest spring days.

A Colorful Trench

To us, nothing says spring is here like putting away our black or dark-colored coats in favor of a trench or light rain jacket in a happy color or print. This trench by Cole Haan (available at Nordstrom) comes in royal blue or ruby red, and it is just about perfect, or try this London Fog coat from Macy’s in any of the pastel or tropical shades – we’re fans of the watermelon pink if you want a punch of color or the rose mist for a softer look.

A Proper Rain Coat With A Hood

While trenches are classic for rainy spring and fall weather for good reason, sometimes you need a serious raincoat. If you must go out in a major downpour, an anorak style with a hood like this one from Via Spiga is necessary to protect your face and hair along with your outfit. It comes in three neutral colors and the olive or camel could be a great alternative to the standard black.

A Foldable Poncho

These rain ponchos are the perfect thing to keep in your car or bag in case of a sudden shower, and at only $20, you can collect a few colors to keep in various places (we’re partial to the black and white polka dots ourselves). They are great for hiking and travel too, and as an added bonus, you can easily keep your purse underneath the poncho to protect it from the weather as well.

A (Collection Of) Lightweight Scarves

If you are anything like us, you’ve collected a variety of scarves in a bunch of different colors and patterns. Light linen or cotton ones are perfect for rainy days, and they can be used to protect your hair in a pinch. Something like this Madewell scarf comes in multiple colors and fits the bill perfectly and they are only $13 at Shopbop or $12.50 at Nordstrom.

A Stylish Hat

A crushable or foldable waterproof hat is invaluable if you live in an area when it rains on a regular basis. Something like one of these adjustable quilted bucket hats from Amazon is definitely chicer and more protective than a baseball cap or hood and won’t wrinkle when it is folded up in your bag. What’s more, we suggest sizing up in rain hats or getting something that adjusts if you want to avoid smushing your hair underneath. Want something that does double duty by providing UV protection when the sun comes back out? Try this wide-brimmed outdoor hat in a luscious violet or fuchsia, also from Amazon.

A Waterproof Bag

If you carry around a laptop, tablet, or other electronics, then you want a bag that will not only not get damaged by rain, but a bag that will protect your precious devices from the water like a classic Longchamp Le Pliage. For something a little more casual that will be great for the beach or pool this summer in addition to working on rainy days, we like the striped Scout bags with their flat burst-proof bottoms that allow them to stand up for ease of use and durability.

A Sturdy Rain Umbrella

There is nothing more frustrating than having your umbrella turn inside out or otherwise fail during a rainstorm (except perhaps getting caught without an umbrella when it is raining cats and dogs), so we’re big fans of these Sharpty inverted umbrellas that come in a myriad of colors for only $23 on Amazon. Naturally, we like the leopard print since animal prints are a neutral, but at that price you can get a few to keep in your tote, your car, and anywhere else you might need a rain umbrella.

A Pair Of Bold Rain Boots

Hunter rain boots are classics for a reason, and this black faux patent quilted pair adds a little more visual interest and panache than the typical rubber rain boot. Or if you want something with a lower shaft, these star-studded Joules wellies offer just the right amount of whimsy.

  1. I bought rainboots for the first time this year. I live in Louisiana where we see our fair share of rain but I’m rain-clothing resistant, don’t use umbrellas. So, buying rainboots was a big deal.
