What Will Celebrities Wear To the Emmy Awards 2020?

Nominations for the 72nd annual Emmy Awards were announced last week and fan favorites like Jennifer Aniston, Meryl Streep and Christina Appelgate made the list. I was excited to welcome an awards show. There hasn’t been one since earlier this year when we were lucky enough to squeeze in the Golden Globes, SAGs and Oscars before the coronavirus pandemic really took hold. So I began thinking about the looks. Gorgeous gowns, fancy jewelry, and beautiful makeup were on my mind as my Emmy Awards 2020 fashion predictions.

Then I broke out of my daydream, remembering that Variety had confirmed that the 2020 Emmy Awards, scheduled to take place on September 20 in Los Angeles, were going virtual amid the ongoing health crisis. The Television Academy issued a joint statement with ABC, explaining that producers have reached out to some “nominees to inform them of our intent to deliver a live show that is both celebratory and safe.”

What Will Celebrities Wear To the Emmys?

Now comes the news that award ceremony’s executive producers have told nominees that they can wear just about anything anything from formalwear to pajamas for the broadcast. Sadly this makes me wonder if anyone will actually show up in a glorious gown and I pine for the days where I waited with bated breath for my favorite fashionista to hit the red carpet in a couture creation. 

Alas, this year, I won’t have the luxury of watching these celebs file in the latest red-carpet trends, but a girl can dream, can’t she? So I took some of this year’s most fashionable nominees (Rachel Brosnahan, Sandra Oh, Tracee Ellis Ross, Cate Blanchett, and Thandie Newton) and thought about what they would wear, if given the chance. 

Here are some of my predictions: 

Emmy Awards 2020 Fashion Predictions

Rachel Brosnahan in Stella McCartney

It’s hard to pinpoint the exact style of Marvelous Ms. Maisel because it’s constantly changing, but what I have noticed is that actress Rachel Brosnahan is privy to bright colors, a bit of peplum, and even a 20s vibe. In January, she wore a menswear-inspired satin look with a ruffled crop top that for some reason screamed the Roaring Twenties to me. Also in January, she wore a fitted green Alex Perry dress with a tulip skirt that came out slightly a the bottom. For the 2020 Vanity Fair Oscars Party in February, she wore a tiered Dolce & Gabbana dress covered with diamonds that had the label’s sensual avant-garde look with a little bit of 20s boudoir thrown in. 

Finally, for the Screen Actors Guild Awards, she wore a fairly simple, cobalt blue Stella McCartney gown with strands of jewels that further emphasized this 20s look that I’ve been seeing a lot of from the actress. 

I’d like to think she is taking some cues from her character Miriam “Midge” Maisel, but that show takes place in the late 50s, not the androgynous but feminine look I am thinking of. 

For the Emmys, I’d like to see the actress in something a little more fancy. Maybe Dolce & Gabbana again or even Oscar de la Renta. I hope to see something sexier and less girly. Of course, knowing this actress, if she had the option to wear something simple, I’d think she’d run with it. Let’s see what happens. 

Sandra Oh in Elie Saab

Killing Eve actress Sandra Oh likes her frou-frou feathers and her asymmetrical necklines. The gowns she’s worn in the past year have come to show a little of both. For the 2020 Oscars, the actress stunned in a pink Elie Saab haute couture gown. It was a little too pink for my taste, but she pulled it off well. I think the star likes to take risks and it shows in her prints and her silhouettes. 

In 2019, for example, the former Grey’s Anatomy actress wore Atelier Versace with delicate Swarovski crystal embellishment and dramatic sculptural shoulder accent.

I’m hoping she’ll wear something that falls somewhere between the sparkly, feathery Elie Saab and the cool and slick Atelier Versace. Maybe something slinky with a feather neckline, like that sparkly silver number she wore to the Vanity Fair Oscars After Party back in February. Yep, I’m going to suggest Cong Tri, the brand by Vietnamese designer Nguyen Cong Tri, who makes glamorous creations with some playful oomph. 

Tracee Ellis Ross in Zuhair Murad 

The feminine, eccentric and glorious Tracee Ellis Ross is always known for her fashion looks, which range from pretty and colorful to shiny and show-stopping. Her most spectacular looks of the past decade range from sleek leather Tom Ford dress at his 2015 presentation to poofy Marc Jacobs at the 2019 NAACP Image Awards. 

Tracee Ellis Ross has worn her share of well-known designers like Chanel Haute Couture, Ralph & Russo and Zuhair Murad (see above). And since those designers run the gamut (there’s also Narciso Rodriguez, Michael Kors and Valentino, just to name a few), it would be really hard to come up with one specific designer I can definitely see her in. Therefore, I’d like to suggest she wear Gucci, a brand that is both bold and colorful, but also a risk-taker. 

Or she should wear one of the designers that she wore to host the American Music Awards in 2018? I’m sure any one of them would create something amazing. 

Cate Blanchett in Mary Katrantzou

Cate Blanchett’s looks are special, out-of-the-box and totally striking. But what is it that amazes me the most about them? The fact that they are so perfectly tailored and cut to her figure, of course. Yes, you would be hard-pressed to find a questionable Cate Blanchett style moment, but you can see that she puts so much detail into her fashion choices and maybe she’s just lucky. She’s the kind of fashionista where everything just looks amazing on her. 

Although she wore British designer Mary Katrantzou to the last Golden Globe Awards back in January, I have a feeling she may return to her Armani Prive routes. Yes, she’s been known to take a turn down a red carpet in this label time and time again and these Emmy Awards will likely be no different – except for the fact that she might just surprise us all and come in pajamas. 

Thandie Newton

I’ve come to notice that Westworld’s Thandie Newton likes her clean labels; Michael Kors… Burberry… and even the moments she wore Gucci and Dolce & Gabbana weren’t so attention-grabbing. The dress above, a stunning Valentino creation, is not like the other looks I’ve seen from Thandie, but it has just enough femininity and princess-feel that I think it’s the right dress for her. 

I’d like to see her in something similar for the Emmy Awards – perhaps another ball gown, a romantic creation and definitely something by the Valentino label.
