To Wear Or Not To Wear Distressed Denim Jeans…THAT Is The Question!

You see them everywhere and you think you’d like to get in on the trend: distressed denim jeans. But can you really wear them when you are over 40? Yes you can! However, just like everything else you find yourself doing lately, you might need to wear the trend in moderation. Where there’s a will, there’s a way, and you can still be fashion-forward in distressed jeans and not look like you are trying too hard. Here is how to wear distressed denim jeans when you are over 40.

So what should you look for? Here are a few tips when shopping for distressed denim jeans for women over 40.

Distressed denim jean styles to avoid.

1. Avoid distressed jeans with large holes.

You will probably want to avoid jeans with holes that show too much skin. So often the holes on these jeans are around the knees, (ack!) which of course is now our least favorite area to show off. Avoid holes right on the knees. Jeans with small holes above the knee work much better. Look for a minimum amount of holes or fraying. Many designers feel our pain and offer denim with very few torn holes strategically placed … nowhere near your knees!

2. Patch it up!

If you find a pair of distressed jeans you love, that have a hole in the wrong place, you can easily patch up the hole. Watch my DIY video (at the bottom of this post) that shows you how to fix a hole in distressed denim jeans. It doesn’t require sewing and it is super simple!

3. Find a different version of distressed jeans

There are variations of distressed jeans that don’t have to include gaping holes! Look for jeans that are cropped, stepped or fringed at the hem or frayed around the waistband or pockets. You can avoid holes altogether and still get that soft and casual distressed denim look.

4. Get a pair of jeans in a cut that flatters you.

Choose your favorite jeans style in distressed denim. If loose styling is best for you, go for loose. If skinnies look awesome on you then get distressed skinnies. Don’t be taken in by the “cool” distressed look if the denim style is not right for you to begin with! The latest versions of distressed denim jeans for 2020 include high-waisted relaxed fitting jeans (my personal favorite), slightly looser straight leg styles, paper bag waist styles, cropped boyfriend, 90s styles and flares. Almost all denim styles come in distressed denim, so you can get a pair that flatters you.

5. Are these too young for me?

If you put on a pair of jeans and think “these may look too young for me” you are probably right! Go with your gut. But if you feel confident in your distressed denim jeans (even if they are from the junior department), then go for them!

The wonderful thing about fashion and trends is that most can be worn by women of all ages. The most important tip is to always wear a trend with confidence.

How To Wear Distressed Denim

Distressed denim goes with anything from sparkly dressy tops and blouses to a basic cotton T-shirt or tank. You can wear them for most occasions but they are not in the dress code for some work places. Contrast the softness of distressed denim jeans with sharp clean lines like a blazer or sleek leather jacket. When it comes to shoes, you can wear sneakers, loafers, mules, booties, slides or sandals. For a dressier look slip on a pair of pumps or high heel strappy sandals.

  1. Thanks for the video- saved me from having to return my $16 jeans from Marshall’s- a big whole at the thigh! A little much for a 60 year old!

  2. Nice article! I’m a trendy 55 year old. I love fashion but wasn’t sure about the appropriateness of this trend. I found a distressed pair that has no skin, no holes, very little “rip.” I’m going to wear them in Boulder CO and hope I can pull it off. We’ll see once I try them. Definitely appreciate your input!
