Updating Your Denim for Spring When You’re Over 40

Twice a year, I love to go through my closet and archive what I have. I donate the items that are outdated or need updating. I also get excited all over again about the items that may have gotten buried in the back of the closet that I loved but forgot I had. We are coming up at a time of year that is the perfect time to do a closet clean up. Honestly, it’s great to do this for every type of clothing. I do a closet clean up for my shoes, as well as jewelry. It may take some time, but in the end, it will be worth it when your wardrobe is tightly curated and fits your current personal style. For this month’s article, I want to talk about updating your denim for spring when you’re over 40. There are so many options for jeans and denim apparel now that it can be a bit difficult to navigate. So let’s have a look at some great new spring denim pieces!

Denim for Spring 2020

As much as I still adore my skinny jeans (I’ve not yet given up on my favorite pairs), I love the spring 2020 season trends. They showed us more relaxed fits and androgynous options. Many of the designers that presented during the spring 2020 shows kept the denim styles classic but also showed pieces with a twist.

The Celine Spring 2020 show had some of my favorite denim looks, with many of the pieces in classic indigo wash with distressed details. Simple silhouettes in blazers, trousers, culottes and A-line skirts were apparent throughout the entire collection. The relaxed fit, high waisted jeans with a slight boot cut that were featured in many of the looks are the epitome of the perfect pair of jeans. You could wear them with literally anything. I also covet the patchwork midi length denim skirts that were featured in several other looks.

Brandon Maxwell’s 2020 spring collection showcased denim in the form of clean lines and perfectly fitted denim jeans. I loved this collection because of the different fit options that were presented. Not only were there classic fit and boot cut jeans, there were also skinny jean options for those of us that are still loving that look.

How To Update Your Spring Denim

I must say, I tend to be tried and true to my denim that works. If it’s comfortable, fits and is flattering, I’ll continue to wear it. That’s why I still love my old skinny jeans! However, it’s so fun to play around with new shapes and styles of denim I can add in as additional wardrobe staples.

I also gravitate towards new denim styles with an interesting twist. Something like these Helmut Lang Femme Hi Spike jeans are super trendy and have cool unexpected details. I would wear these with a simple white tee paired with a black structured blazer and finish it off with a pair of simple white sneakers.

If you are looking for a staple piece, try this Levi’s Original Sherpa Trucker Jacket. This is a great option to wear during the transitional spring weather. Just throw on an extra-cozy scarf for additional warmth.

If you want to go the accessories route, why not try this See by Chloe Flo Denim Tote. I like this because a lot of denim accessories can come off as very young, but this tote has a silhouette that is chic, sophisticated and perfect for women over 40.

Expert Spring Denim Style Tips

1. Just because it’s a current trend, doesn’t mean you have to try it.

I’m seeing a lot of jean trends that are gravitating towards the younger crowd, like “mom” jeans and acid wash. Do you remember living through those trends the first time around? Then it’s probably best if you leave them for rookies. There are ways to bring in new denim silhouettes to your style, but let’s be sure to keep it elevated and sophisticated. Something like these Ivy Trouser Jeans from Free People would be an amazing new staple for your spring denim.

2. Comfort is key.

How many times have you had a pair of jeans where you absolutely loved the way they looked, but the fit was off? The waistband was too tight, the fit quite right in the thighs or the inseam was too short or long? It takes a lot of work to find the correct brand, fit and size that works for you. So don’t skimp on the search and once you find them, it’s OK to splurge a little on the right pair or two.

3. Denim is not just for pants.

We all know there are covetable denim pieces that are beyond just jeans. Finding a great classic-looking denim jacket, the perfect fitting denim shirt or even a soft fabric denim dress is something to get excited about. I love the contrasting colors of this Wash Lab Denim Midi Dress. The extra special details are a wonderful way to set your look apart from a more basic denim color dress, but it doesn’t feel overly trendy.

4. Play around with other accessories.

The headband trend has been really taking off, and though I feel like it’s generally for the younger set, I think this Lele Sandoughi Half & Half Denim Headband is a lovely option for women over 40. It’s not overly embellished, so it lacks that element that makes it feel too young. Additionally, you can splurge on this Saint Laurent Denim Wristlet to take your denim accessories to a high end level.

5. Embrace denim on denim.

Maybe I’m in the minority here, but I absolutely love an outfit that pairs multiple denim pieces together. I prefer to wear my denim trousers with a denim shirt or denim blazer. The taboo of the Canadian tuxedo is long gone. We saw this look a lot on the spring 2020 runways, so if you haven’t gotten on board with this look yet, now is the perfect time. The denim shades don’t have to match. In fact, it looks better if they don’t.
