Celebrity Style: Unique Interpretations of Menswear Fashion

Menswear inspired fashion on women is a trend that is timeless and never seems to go out of style. In fact, new and unique interpretations of menswear fashion are always returning the forefront – whether that is a new asymmetrical take on a tuxedo blazer, black trousers that are oversized or suddenly super skinny, padded shoulders (or not), bold colors, prints or a new kind of crisp button down shirt. In the past we’ve seen white blouses replaced by camisoles and belts replaced by bows, layers and layers of underpinnings or sometimes none at all.

The four fashionistas below offer their own unique stylistic representation of what menswear-inspired fashion means to them. Let’s see if they succeed in their choices.

Kyle Richards

We all remember Real Housewives of Beverly Hills’ Erika Jayne’s skinny pantsuit moment at the CFDA Awards. Yes, she was the first Real Housewife to attend the event, but she also hit upon a trend that took that fashion awards show by storm – and subsequently the red carpet soon afterwards. Now another Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star is following in her footsteps. At the premiere of her new TV series “American Woman” on Paramount Networks, Kyle Richards wore a chic streamlined tuxedo style menswear ensemble complete with crisp white button down shirt. Where she differed from the norm was the white bow tie (which BFF Kris Jenner probably helped her fix on the red carpet) and those metallic shoes which added a big statement to the outfit, but honestly were all wrong. At least the shoes were. No matter – adding a little girl sparkle to an otherwise androgynous outfit is always an interesting idea.

Idina Menzel

I enjoyed the black piping on Idina Menzel’s crisp white shirt (which she wore without a blazer, mind you) and even though the pants are just a wee bit too long, the large bow is an interesting and unique addition to this entire ensemble. Was the shirt supposed to be askew?

Jessica Alba

Post-pregnancy and color coordinated? Jessica Alba has never looked better in a bold raspberry pantsuit with white pumps and a white top underneath that looks like it could be a bodysuit. I love the elongated jacket and the clean lines of her silhouette. Sometimes it pays to go with a bold color that is well fitted and looks perfect against your skin tone.

Lucy Hale

Taking her cue from Jennifer Aniston, Anna Kendrick, Olivia Wilde and other celebs who have worn suits with nothing underneath, Lucy Hale dons a black Max Mara blazer and trousers with a conveniently low-cut neckline. It’s super feminine, super sexy, and still menswear-inspired. I like when celebs do this, if they can pull it off. I don’t know, however, if I would suggest trying it at home. Only if you’re feeling daring. In the case of the star from Pretty Little Liars, the blazer is way too plunging for my taste, but hey, whatever works. She can pull it off.
