There are the trends that work. Then there are the trends that don’t. The following four trends, however, are a hit or miss. In fact, I’m not sure which they are because the celebs that wear them do it so well – and I’m not confident anyone else could carry them off the way they do.
With that being said, here are four superstar trends and the stylish stars that wear them.
The Bowler Hat (Worn by Cara Delevingne)
This trend is quite a popular one – worn by many a Brit “IT” girl…and Harry Styles, of course. Created in 1849, the bowler hat was originally made popular by the British working class. Cara Delevigne’s modern version worn at the Brit Awards is a wide-brimmed modern take on the “billycock” topper, as the hat is fondly referred to. Celebrities like Beyonce, Taylor Swift, and Michelle Williams have also been seen in various types of the derby. Some of them look cool in the trend and some of them look strange. Which begs the question – is this look a hit or a miss? Going further, is Cara the only one that can wear it?
The Cupcake Dress (Worn by Kristen Stewart)
Should a celebrity wear a dress with a poofy balloon skirt and risk looking like a cupcake? Such is the question I have asked myself after witnessing Kristen Stewart in an unlikely gown at the Cesar Awards where she was the first American star to win the French award. Of course, there’s no cupcake here — the dress has been referred to as a frock with “tiers of petals.” But it certainly makes me pnder why celebs do this to themselves? (Especially Kristen Stewart, who looks more comfortable in a pair of dress pants and some pointy heels.) Anyone remember Rihanna’s puffy Grammy confection?
The T-Shirt with a Ballgown Skirt (Worn by Olivia Wilde)
I’ve always loved the floral dress with the layered leather jacket. The t-shirt with a ball gown skirt, on the other hand, is a dressy meets casual look I’m torn about. Granted, Olivia Wilde pulls it off pretty well – though I’m not especially in love with her H&M Conscious tee and skirt combination. Nevertheless, its a great call out to the world. You can wear high and low if you want to – just be careful and do it right.
The Red Jumpsuit (Worn by January Jones)
It’s not surprising to see a celeb in a jumpsuit. Many stars wear them. But usually those jumpsuits are in toned down colors or black. Unless you’re Nicki Minaj or maybe Lady Gaga, it’s not so easy to wear a jumpsuit in a really, really bold color. Kudos to January Jones for trying to do it – it looks great against her hair – but it’s a crazy style and the asymmetrical neckline makes it even more bold. If you do want to try this at home, without looking like Nicki Minaj, you can pick a bold color and throw on a blazer over it.
