Celebrity Style: Best Dressed Women Over 40

“Life really does begin at 40. Up until then you are just doing research.” – Carl G Jung

Does this apply to fashion, too? Are some of the best forty-something celebrities also the best dressers? They are, if these four fashionistas have anything to say about it! Let’s take a look at the four best dressed celebs over 40 and the four different types of looks they wear to make themselves stand out from the crowd.

Amy Adams (The Streamlined)
Sure, we’ve seen Amy Adams wear a cool print, an asymmetrical neckline and a funky shoe or accessory. But what do I love most about Amy Adams’ style? She almost always goes with the streamlined look. This is her personal style, she knows it, and she owns it. She goes with what is age appropriate and what looks good on her. She’s not afraid to wear bright colors like orange and royal blue, but she typically keeps her look modest, modern and streamlined. Take for example, her gown at the Golden Globes, which was a sparkly black strapless Tom Ford, with a metallic sheen but not much else. Or the orange Dunmore dress by Roland Mouret she wears above, which hugs her body in all the right places, but keeps it elegant with short sleeves and one color.
Tracee Ellis Ross (The Colorful)

Tracee Ellis Ross has had some incredible style moments and most of them, believe it or not, involve big bold color and prints. Whether it’s a floral fit and flare or a multi-print Roksanda number with nude sandals, the Black-ish TV star and daughter of Diana Ross knows how to work the boldest and brightest looks in the prettiest colors and textures. Who knew you could pair so many colors and trends and still look so good. This 44-year old wins big in my book.
Chloe Sevigny (The Risk-Taker)
Chloë Sevigny may be 42 years old, but often people say she dresses like a twenty-year-old. That could be a bad thing, if it wasn’t Chloë Sevigny. What makes this actress/fashion designer/former model stand apart is that she knows what she likes and she dresses accordingly. She takes risks and doesn’t care what people say. What she likes is what she likes. What works for her is what works for her. It’s not uncommon to see her in ruffles, poofy shoulders, leather, denim cutoffs, red lipstick, lace, and everything in between. She emulates the biker chick rocker in all of us and she can, even at 42 years old.
Eva Mendes (The Fashion Mom)
I’ve always enjoyed the Eva Mendes look, in all of its colorful glory. When this 42-year old actress became a mother, she also started a line for New York and Company. One could argue that her appearance, which was more often than not, silk, peach colors, floral, violet, and pink coats, suddenly became, I guess you would call it, “motherish.” In many cases, this word has a negative connotation – frumpy, messy, old, boring and modest. In the case of Eva Mendes, this range, which took on a sexier, bolder, tighter look as she came into her own as a fashion designer, showcased her maturity. And that’s why I call her “the fashion mom.”
