Earlier this month, the federal government began to recommend that all people living in the US, particularly in coronavirus hotspots, wear face coverings or masks when leaving home, in an effort to stop the spread of the virus. Even before then we spotted some celebrities in face masks.
Fashion designers quickly jumped on the bandwagon, particularly when New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo pleaded to businesses to pitch in with personal protective equipment for healthcare workers on the front lines of the outbreak.
Designers Christian Siriano and Naeem Khan, both based in New York, as well as clothing companies like Rag and Bone and Sanctuary began to make coronavirus masks.

Some celebrities, for their part, have been vocal about telling the general population to cover up and put on a mask. But the best way for a popular star to make a point? Lead by example, of course.
Celebrities In Face Masks
Karolina Kurkova
Supermodel Karolina Kurkova is likely to be one of those celebs leading by example. The former Victoria’s Secret runway model has teamed up with friend Ashley Liemer, the founder of baby and kid goods brand Billie Blooms to produce non-medical masks to help “flatten the curve,” and protect families as part of the #MasksForAll movement. Proceeds from the masks will go to workers of Feeding America, the nation’s largest hunger relief organization.
Gwyneth Paltrow
Back in February, when COVID-19 was just beginning to spread in Europe and had not yet hit the US with full force, Gwyneth Paltrow posted a photo of herself on Instagram en route to Paris wearing a black face mask by a company called Airinum. The covering, called the Urban Air Mask 2.0, was touted as “the world’s most advanced mask” and it sold for a whopping $69. It was available in colors like onyx, black, quartz grey and pearl pink as well as different sizes.
But, alas, it’s been sold out for quite a while. Kudos to Paltrow though, for spreading the message that face masks need to be a thing to stop the spread of coronavirus.
“I’ve already been in this movie,” she wrote. “Stay safe. Don’t shake hands. Wash hands frequently.”
Renee Zellweger
Just two months ago, many of us at home were watching Renee Zellweger pick up the Best Actress Oscar for her role as Judy Garland in the biopic Judy. Boy, how the times have changed! But at least Bridget Jones is being cautious. She was spotted in Los Angeles doing a quick grocery run wearing a surgical mask.

And my vote for cutest couple in masks goes to…
But seriously, how many pictures have you seen of Ben Affleck and his new girlfriend doing their daily dog walks, wearing masks? I’ve seen plenty. And those masks are always stylish and interesting. Sometimes she wears prints and he wears black, and sometimes, on those special days, they were masks that match. And Vogue even does an article on how these two are setting the right example. They call it the next trend in Hollywood and beyond. What do you think?
Julia Roberts
Julia Roberts is proving that she is still a fashion icon, even in a casual look for an essential CVS run. Wearing jeans, a cool bomber jacket, and Ray Ban sunglasses, the Pretty Woman and Eat, Pray, Love star’s most standout accessory is her “artsy” face mask. Also making a statement – those Gucci loafers with fur trim!
In all seriousness, though, Roberts has educated on Instagram about the importance of staying home amidst the current outbreak. And fashionable or not, by wearing a mask, she’s educating about covering up to protect yourself (and others) too.
