Casual New Year’s Eve Outfits For Women Over 40

We are getting to the end of another year, and I have realized as a woman past 35 years, the appeal of going all glitz and glam for a New Year’s celebration is sometimes lost. Every few years I’ll get the inkling to head out in my best attire, but lately I have been more excited to keep things low key. That is the case for this year, especially paired with the fact that I’ll be having my wedding just a few days after the New Year so keeping it casual is kind of a must for me. That being said, I’ll be in search of my coziest casual attire to wear as I either chill on my couch, my friend’s couch or find a casual house party to attend. Let’s focus on some casual New Year’s Eve outfits that are perfect for your low key evening.

Casual New Year’s Eve Outfit Ideas

I love that designers today are embracing casual looks, loose fabrics and comfort. Even though many may not be putting lots of actual loungewear down the runway, loungewear-inspired casual looks were represented beautifully. One of my favorite collections that showed casual looks was The Row. The flowing fabrics and easy silhouettes in neutral colors make a breathtaking aesthetic. The high-end, lush fabrics elevate the simple lines and will make any person feel like a million bucks. One of my favorite looks was a charcoal, oversized duster (in what I assume is a luxurious cashmere) paired with a white, silk mock neck top. I would wear that outfit day in, day out if it was in my closet. It’s the perfect option for me to wear to a small holiday celebration.

New Year’s Eve Outfits for Women Over 40

As I mentioned above, it’s highly likely that I will be spending New Year’s either at home in my pajamas or at a close friends house in an extremely casual outfit. If you choose to go casual, it’s still possible to do it with style. There will be no heels for me for this year’s celebration, instead I’d rather opt for these Cougar Dani High Top Sneakers. They are guaranteed to keep your feet warm and dry in even the most inclement weather. I love the details. And the fact that I don’t have to slosh around in heavy, ugly snow boots to stay comfortable and dry. The rabbit fur trim adds some extra flare that gives a bit of luxury that you may miss when dressing down.

Elevated Casual

If you want to elevate your casual New Year’s Eve look just a little bit, try this Eileen Fisher Satin Shirtdress. I absolutely adore items like this. They are so forgiving in shape, but still make you feel like you’ve put thought into your look. I wore one like this while spending Thanksgiving with family. I was extremely comfortable as all of the food that I ate that day was hidden under the loose structure of the shirt! If you are in a colder climate you can pair this with leggings. And if you live in a warmer climate you can probably go bare leg with a cute pair of booties and a lightweight scarf.

New Year’s Eve Scarves

Speaking of scarves, I practically live in scarves during the cold weather months and a casual New Year’s celebration is no exception. Being able to wrap myself up in an oversized scarf is heaven. A beautifully patterned blanket scarf will pop against any outfit. I think this Tory Burch Print Wool Scarf makes a great compliment to any low key outfit. The rich colors would look perfect against a neutral black or cream top or you can keep it festive and pair it with a brightly colored loose fitting maxi dress or tunic top.

Casual New Year’s Eve Outfits Expert Style Tips

1. Invest in a capsule collection of comfy clothes.

I know for some, the thought of spending a small fortune on clothes to knock around the house in is absurd. However, there is something to be said about having a beautiful cashmere robe. Or a luxuriously soft pair of silk pajamas that make you feel relaxed and at peace in your personal space. These Karen Mabon Tiger Blossom Silk Sleep Pants are made with a gorgeous floral print that is a welcome change from the classic solid prints.

2. Covet easy-to-care-for garments.

If cashmere is not your cup of tea, there are still many options that look and feel high quality for your casual nights in. Make sure to look at fabric content and care instructions when you shop. It’s important to find pieces that are made from the right fabric blends. Look for fabrics that will allow you to just throw the garment into the washing machine and survive a regular or gentle wash cycle. I can’t tell you all of the spills that I have when relaxing at home. So being able to toss my clothes in the laundry is must.

3. Find items that you can transition from couch to car.

Find items that you can wear while relaxing at home. Then throw on a pair of sneakers to go out and run errands or go out for lunch. These pieces make the perfect transition pieces. A nice, oversized sweater or cardigan is an ideal option to start with. I love this Express Belted Cardigan to wear at home to keep me warm, but it also can be paired with leggings to run out to a movie, a friend’s place or the grocery store. The neutral color and versatility of wear makes it a great piece to have in your closet.

4. Don’t forget to finish off your casual look.

Socks and underwear are mostly considered a gift faux paus these days. However, I love a thick and warm sock to wear when lounging around my house. Or I can bring them with me to wear to a friend’s house after I leave my shoes at the door. I’ve discovered these super warm and thick socks by Fits that are specially constructed to hug your feet. You can also give these bison socks a try. They are made from bison down fur and claim to be softer than cashmere.
