Chic Cabin Fashion to Pack for Your Country Getaway

Planning on escaping to a lakehouse, cabin, cottage, or seaside spot for a relaxing break outside of the city this summer? What will you need to pack for your country getaway?

Packing for a trip to somewhere that’s casual and rustic can get surprisingly complicated. You want to look good, and wear nothing too fussy. Plus whatever you bring needs to be suitable for a variety of activities, various types of weather, and likely can get dirty without sustaining too much damage. Also, who wants to look like they are trying too hard in a destination where hiking boots or sandals are the norm?

We put together some options for a country getaway or a trip to a lakehouse, cabin in the woods or seaside cottage. These pieces are relatively sturdy and practical, but still have some style and will look great in all your vacation pics.

Button Downs Always Work

From simple linen or linen-cotton blends for hot weather to flannels for chillier times, a button-down or button-up shirt can be thrown over nearly anything.  It can go from casual to well, less casual in no time. We’ve been fans of Uniqlo’s premium linen shirts for a long time. They come in many colors, hardly wrinkle and look great tucked in, knotted or worn loose. And the price is right at around $20-$30 a pop!

Wear All The Scarves

We love a classic cotton bandanna like these from the OHSAY USA store on Amazon simply tied around the neck (dip it in freezing water to keep yourself cool on hot days), and a bigger fleece or wool scarf can keep you warm around the campfire or fire pit at night. And an insect-repellant scarf like these from Tickled Pink (available on Amazon) might be a life-saver if you are traveling somewhere where mosquitos are an issue.

Nix The Typical Cargo Pant

You know what pants we mean – the ones with tons of pockets and might even zip off into shorts. Don’t wear those pants! It is possible to get some chic joggers with pockets that work in the same way and don’t make you look like you came straight out of the early aughts. We’re fans of these drawstring waist joggers with side pockets from Open Edit at Nordstrom that would be ideal with a fitted tee or a button-up tied at the waist.

Practical Footwear Matters

This is not the time for strappy little sandals or ballet flats. But you don’t need to resign yourself to clunky footwear that you only wear a few times per year, if that. Hiking boots and sneakers have gotten surprisingly chic (check out the Adidas Terrex line), and even Everlane has come out with their sleek ReNew sport sandals

Country Getaway Bags That Work

We’re almost never fans of the “practical” canvas or super durable hiking bags or similar items. However, cross-body sling bags or day packs like the Athleta Kinetic Sling bag are nice enough to carry even when you are not exploring the wilderness or hanging out by a lake, river, ocean or other body of water.

Bring The Bling

Just because you are out in the sticks, it doesn’t mean that you need to leave all your sparkle behind. A simple pair of studs or necklace will keep you feeling chic and like yourself even if you are covered in dirt or sand. Or go for metallic accessories, like these sneakers by Sam Edelman that can be dressed up or down and coordinate with nearly everything.

Don’t Forget The Sun Protection

Sunscreen is always important, of course, but things like hats, rashguards, and swim pants or shorts are also essential if you are going to be out in the hot sun all day. These long swim shirts from Coolibar have UPF protection and some flattering seaming, ruching, and zippers, making them simultaneously super protective and more stylish than the standard rashguards.
