How To Style The Boho Chic Trend When You’re Over 40

If your personal style tends to sway towards casual and comfortable, then boho style could be a great option for you. I know when thinking “boho” your mind immediately goes to 20-somethings at Coachella with inappropriately short-shorts and glitter-bombed faces. However, that’s not the boho I’m talking about. Boho styles for women over 40 are vastly different and have a strong presence. This month, I want to focus on the boho fashion trend and how to wear it while looking fabulous (and age appropriate!) when you’re over 40.

What Is Boho Style?

Boho is short for bohemian, or for the Bohemian Homeless, who were wanderers and free spirits in mid-to-late 19th century. Boho style became popular in the 60s and 70s, and then again in the millennium. It has wavered from the forefront to the background in fashion until now. Designers included these gypsy inspired elements on the runway and the trend is big once again for spring 2019. The look is characterized by colorful, organic, detailed folk-inspired pieces. Examples of the boho look include the peasant blouse, tiered and ruffled skirts and dresses, tunics and embellishments including beading, fringe and embroidery.

The Boho Fashion Trend

For a few seasons now, we have seen the boho chic trend on the spring ready-to-wear runways. This year, I absolutely loved what I saw! It all seemed so elevated and I loved the contrast of bright colors in some shows with subdued, muted tones in others. One of my favorite shows was the Oscar de la Renta show which featured a flowing and sophisticated maxi dress. The creamy white color was to die for and the deep V-neck was stunning. I also adored the extravagant color combinations and details in the Etro show, which featured beautiful primary colors, paisley prints, ruffles, ties, knits and patchwork details.

I’m not huge fan of florals, but I love the comfortable and flowy feel of a boho style maxi dress. So I’m swooning over this Nha Khanh ruffled maxi dress. The color is beautiful and I am swooning over the boho vibe it offers without feeling hippy-dippy. Another great option to slip a little boho style into your wardrobe is this Rebecca Taylor embroidered cotton blouse. Replace your go-to white button front shirt with this top paired with your favorite business casual slacks and your most comfortable ballet flats. Now you’ve achieved an effortless boho look with literally no effort! Finally, I’m fawning over these Vince suede loafers. The subtlety makes them wearable with pretty much anything, but you still get the essence of a boho espadrille. Not to mention the absolutely exquisite dusty rose color.

How To Style Boho Fashion

Here are a few boho fashion styling tips for women over 40. The key is to think “minimalist” boho.

1. Style your outfit around only one frilly boho piece, such as an eyelet blouse, ruffle dress or midi skirt, and keep the rest of your accessories clean and modern.

2. Wear solid colored boho pieces rather than tiny baby prints or country florals. This is an easy way to keep your boho look sophisticated.

3. Find pieces with subtle boho details and materials that can work with your everyday wardrobe. The braided jute trim on these Vince espadrilles and the Gap woven straw bag are perfect examples with their modern shapes.
