I Like Big Buttons and I Can Not Lie

Button, button, who’s got the button? For the last several seasons, many designers have been showing them – and these buttons are large and in charge. Just as big 80’s style looks like hulking shoulder pads, wide pant legs and giant belts are making their presence on the runways again, so are ginormous buttons! I like the big buttons trend (and I can not lie).

Look for high contrast, interesting or oversize buttons on everything from skirts to dresses to pants to sweaters to shoes and of course, on coats and jackets. You can make the transition from summer to fall with this buttoned-up look very easily.

The intriguing thing about of this trend is often the buttons serve no real purpose other than to embellish each piece. These buttons are purely decorative, but they can adorn in fantastic ways. The options are endless.

Go for military styles with gleaming gold bold buttons like those on the Balmain runway. Or try the asymmetrical styling at Altuzarra where buttons form flattering contours across the body’s curves. Or go for a whimsical look. I adore the oversized and irregular shaped buttons down the back of this Tibi little navy dress. If you don’t think you want big buttons on your clothes, you may like to “button up” your shoes like the Mary Janes from Prada.

Style tip: Wear your large button fashion one piece at a time (you don’t really need the jacket and the matching skirt, which will save you money too). Wear a big button jacket or sweater with solid, stripe or plaid pants for work and then wear it over your distressed jeans on the weekend. Try a billowy blouse to balance a slim fitting big button skirt. Also, be sure to keep your jewelry and accessories to a minimum, because the buttons offer built-in bling!

Make a statement with the big buttons trend now and into the fall.
