Here Are The Best Swimwear Trends to Rock Over 40

If you’re planning a beach vacation for spring break, summertime, or well, any time at all, then now is the time to start looking for that perfect swimsuit. After all, it can be tough to find something that you’re comfortable in that’s also chic, as well as being practical enough for all the activities that you’re likely planning to do at the beach or pool. So we put together the best swimwear trends for women over 40.

While shopping for a bathing suit can make even the most body confident of us cringe at times, we definitely don’t ever want to skip the beach or the pool. Plus, we like to actually swim (and snorkel, scuba dive, stand-up paddle board, ride jet-skis and more in our suits), so we need something that will stand up to that activity! But even if all you do is lounge by the water (and we love doing that too), having a swimsuit that you feel confident in goes a long way towards enjoying your vacation or day at the beach.

We also love swimwear that can go from poolside or seaside to lunch or dinner with ease. With these swim suits you can just toss on a cover-up like a casual sundress, skirt, or palazzo pants and go. So we kept that in mind with these on-trend picks.

Best Swimwear Trends 2020

While there are some classic bathing suit looks – we’ll always love a solid black, white, or red one piece, for instance, or a fun gingham or polka-dot bikini – there are definitely some key 2020 swimwear trends that we’ve been seeing that are ideal for women over 40.

Eres Clever Belted Swimsuit, $560

High Neck Swimwear Trend

One of the trends we’ve been loving is higher necklines on swimsuits. A high cut halter neck, crew neck, or similar style can be very flattering, protect the delicate skin on your decolletage from the sun, and generally keep everything in place and if you’re busty, you know how important that is! This Eres swimsuit is stunning, and it also features a stunning open back and it’s belted, another major 2020 women’s swimsuit trend.

Cover Long Sleeve Swimsuit, $190

Sleeves On Swim Suits

Rash guards and one-pieces with long or short sleeves are definitely on-trend, and for good reason. They provide great sun protection and can be more comfy if you don’t love showing your upper arms; what’s more, some of the best swimwear brands are coming up with sleeved swimsuits. We’re big fans of a simple black one piece, but Cover takes it to the next level (see what we did there) with this zip-up long-sleeved swim suit style. This swimsuit from Shopbop is perfect for surfing, snorkeling, water-skiing and any other active sports.

Solid & Striped The Nina Belted One Piece Swimsuit, $158

Belts On Swim Suits

Want to highlight your waistline but not thrilled about wearing a two-piece? Belted suits can be the perfect option. Find one where the belt hits at the smallest part of your torso. This black and white number from Solid & Striped (also from  Shopbop) is a great choice, and we love the open back. In fact, we’re fans of open back suits or suits with interesting details on the back in general. It’s often an area we can feel confident about at nearly any age and there’s something to be said for any ensemble that looks great both coming and going.

La Blanca Ombré Print Belted One-Piece Swimsuit, $144

Floral Print Swim Suits

While tropical florals are pretty much always available in the swimwear section, this year we’re seeing a lot of leafy prints and bold citrus colors that look like they are straight out of the rainforest. This La Blanca swim suit might be one of our favorite variations on the typical rainforest inspired prints though, with its sunset hues and unique silhouette featuring a tie at the waist and criss-cross halter-style straps.

Aerie Layered One Piece Swimsuit, now $29.97

Cut Out Swimwear Trend

While cutouts can be tricky, we’re fans of cutouts around the rib cage area or a keyhole style cutout at the neckline. These can serve to highlight the areas that you want to show off and draw the eye away from areas you’d rather not. This layered suit from Aerie is just about perfect in that regard, especially if you’re petite up top.

J. Crew Ruched Bandeau One-piece Swimsuit, $87.99

Ruching

When done right, ruching can be magical. We’ve been seeing a lot of designer swimwear with incredible ruching that somehow simultaneously tucks everything while enhancing all the right places. This bandeau top swimsuit from J.Crew comes in a bunch of colors and has a removable halter strap; it would also look great with a pareo or sarong for apres-swim drinks and snacks.

Tempt Me One Piece Vintage Off Shoulder Ruffled Swimsuit, $27.99

Ruffles

Ruffled swimsuits have come a long way from the skirted swim suits that your grandma wore. For instance, this off-the-shoulder ruffled one-piece from Amazon comes in a bunch of colors (although we’re kinda loving the white version with the green leaf print) and the price is right. This is another bathing suit that could easily go from poolside to a cafe with the addition of a skirt, sarong, or casual flowy pants.

Swim Solutions Embellished Scoop Neck One-Piece Swimsuit, $49.95 and Camilla Crystal-embellished Printed Swimsuit, $329

Major Embellishments

These swimming suits for women might not be the most practical, but there’s no denying the glamour factor that comes from having a swimsuit with sparkle. Want to keep things cheap and cheerful? This Swim Solutions suit from Amazon is bling on a budget, but if you want to splurge we adore this Camilla crystal-studded snake print swim suit that makes a seriously stylish statement.

So, What To Wear To The Beach This Summer (Or Anytime)?

Anything you want! Which is our answer to most fashion questions, but we also recognize that swimwear can be uniquely challenging. That’s why one of the things we love about all these 2020 swimwear trends is that they are all very flattering and realistic for women over 40, or women of any age!

One tip to making your swimwear shopping experience less painful is to skip the dressing rooms. Even high-end stores can have dressing rooms that are freezing cold with bad lighting and terrible mirrors. That is quite possibly the worst environment to try on anything, especially something revealing and form-fitting. We promise, swimsuit shopping can actually be fun! Just skip the dressing rooms and try things on at home with all the appropriate accessories.

What are your favorite swim suit designers, and what’s your favorite thing to wear to the beach or pool?
