The Best At-Home Beauty Advice For Sheltering In Place

So it’s been a while since we went to the salon and we’re all figuring out our actual hair color and texture. We’re attempting to do our own nails and waxing or tweezing our own eyebrows. Some of us are even getting creative with the hair dye and possibly cutting our own hair or having family members do it. At-home beauty may get…dangerous, to say the least.

But sheltering in place or being stuck at home doesn’t mean we need to neglect beauty and self care. Who cares if you don’t look perfect but really, isn’t beauty and makeup a primary form of self care?

That said, now might be the best time to experiment with a new look or fragrance. No one else can see (or smell) you and we’re all socially distancing anyways. Here is some at-home beauty advice for sheltering in place.

Eye Makeup

So we never thought we’d be writing about the best makeup to wear with a face mask, but here we are. A little extra eyeliner tends to work well, and don’t forget the mascara. Eyelash curlers are vital even if you don’t want to put on makeup.  The Kevyn Aucoin eyelash curler is the gold standard but She Umera works better for some of us depending on our eye shapes.

One thing to keep in mind also – lighter colored face masks will definitely get mascara or eyeliner stains. So choose your colors and patterns wisely and wash them between wears!

Or if you are staying at home, you might like to experiment with this ColorPop palette. Add some bold shades as eyeliner (think of your inner Cleopatra) or layer the more neutral colors for a more classic look.

Face Masks

Since we’re all sheltering in place, it’s the ideal moment to upgrade or change your skincare. And taking a minute to relax with a face mask or a great moisturizer like the Water Sleeping Mask from Laneige or the Fresh Black Tea Firming Mask. We won’t judge if you wear them during the day too but maybe wash your face before a work Zoom call.

Hair Masks

We also need take care of our tresses and while we’re not going to mention the issues with dealing with roots or other hair care challenges (at least in this post), a restorative hair mask like this one from MorrocanOil might be the perfect way to treat yourself.

Deborah Lippmann Cuticle Lab – Nail Treatment Set, $45 ($75.00 value)

Nails

Okay so most of us are probably used to getting salon mani-pedis, but that’s obviously not possible right now. While we’ve seen a lot of people doing their own dip or gel nails on YouTube, we tend to prefer something a little more user friendly like this Deborah Lippmann cuticle lab kit.

Fragrance

A great scent can definitely lift your mood. And now might be a good time to test out new perfumes or essential oils. We’re fans of the Atelier cologne perfume wardrobe which is a wonderful way to try out a lot of interesting and soothing fragrances. If you are looking for something a bit more dangerous, the Juliette Has A Gun discovery set is amazing (this writer particularly loves Lady Vengeance, but they are all uniquely great).

Highlighters

Getting the perfect highlight is an actual challenge, but let’s get it done while sheltering in place, no? It’s what Rihanna would want so why not check out her Fenty Beauty Kilowatt highlighter and figure out how to make your cheekbones pop and your skin glow like a goddess. We also love the Anastasia Glow Kit. Both of these options have shades that work well as an inner eye highlight and will make you look more awake and alive on Zoom and life in general.

So what are you doing to beautify yourself or practice self care while we are sheltering in place? Or have you just totally left it all behind – which is also very valid and maybe another form of self care as well? We want to know what you are doing, so share it in the comments or on our Facebook group.
