Art And Fashion Come Together In Net-A-Porter’s New Capsule Collection

Wearable art isn’t typically worn by the masses, but Net-a-Porter is starting to change that. The e-tailer’s new bespoke, couture-inspired collection, dubbed Art Capsul, was curated by Stacy Engman, the chief curator of contemporary art at The National Arts Club in New York. Engman chose five contemporary artists to create made-to-order garments, giving the artists full rein to create whatever they wanted. The artists – Marina Abramovic, George Condo, Terence Koh, Vik Muniz and Mickalene Thomas – have never made clothes before. They represent different genres of art, from Thomas’ multimedia art to Muniz’s photography. The result showed at the Palais de Tokyo during couture week on July 3. Editors were invited to get a glimpse of the pieces, which will be available online in September. The garments ranged in style. Abramovic created “Energy Clothes” made up of seven jumpsuits in different colors, one for each day of the week. The jumpsuits also represent the solar system; each color is inspired by a planet – like Tuesday’s suit, which is red for Mars. Abramovic strategically placed seven magnets in the garments to increase the wearer’s energy.

Other garments were less contextually complex, yet just as dreamy. Koh created a bomber-style coat encrusted in thousands of hand-sewn pearls. And Muniz’s “Peau d’Ane Gown” is made up of a variegated high-resolution digital print on duchess satin. The art-meets-fashion pieces will be sold at high-fashion prices, but Engman insists they are very wearable. “I wanted the artists to use their artwork to conceive a garment from beginning to end,” Engman told Style.com. “The process in fashion and in art is very similar in that both artists and designers are striving to create visual experiences that did not exist before. But this project is about contemporary art, and that is about the future. It’s just that this is art that can be worn.” – Tanisha Wallis Sources: Style.com, WWD
