A Trend Gaining New Heights: Parachute Into Drawstring Style

Designers are taking a new approach to utilitarian fashion this season. Enter the drawstring. I’m not talking about drawstring waistlines, drawstring handbags or drawstrings on the bottom edge of a parka. The latest drawstring style doesn’t really seem to serve any purpose at all, other than to create interesting shirred textures and shaping (and to make you look totally cool). Some pieces have strategically placed pull cords and ties simply used as embellishments, and many create asymmetric slashes or curves to give you a more flattering shape.

The new drawstrings give unusual designs and ruching to tops, skirts, dresses and sweaters in solids and patterns. Designers like Phillip Lim, Calvin Klein, Alexander Wang, Derek Lam and others showed the trend at New York Fashion Week for spring 2018. Since the look is sculptural, modern and sporty, I will bet we will see a lot more of it in the future.

HOW TO WEAR THE NEW DRAWSTRING STYLE

A drawstring embellished piece makes a statement on its own, so it’s easy to style. Keep it simple. Wear a drawstring dress this summer with sneakers, clean sandals or slides. A drawstring shirred top can be worn with jeans of course, or sharp black pants. The ease of dressing with these pieces is some thing you are sure to embrace.
