6 Fall Trends You Are Too Old To Pull Off

over the knee socks, Acne oxfords, schoolgirl look
If you are over 40 I am sorry but you are too old to pull off these trends! However, I do have a few solutions and styling tips to make some of these trends work for you.
1. Anklets, Knee Socks or Over-the-Knee Socks with Oxfords (pictured above)

The trend of wearing socks of all lengths with oxfords (or sandals!) may look comfortable but you can’t pull it off without looking like an old man. Simply wear the oxfords without socks with cropped pants or jeans. You can wear these cool oxfords c a r e f u l l y with a skirt, such as a slim maxi or a full skirt, but make sure it is over the knee, please! Depending on the weather you may want to wear tights.

Side Cut out dress, spanx camisole
2. Cut-Out Dresses
Avoid even little cut outs on dresses, even if you are in shape! A solution for some side cut out dresses is to  wear a tight camisole under the dress and make it look like it is color-blocked. (Do not do this with a back cut out – uggh!) A sleek layer like this SPANX® camisole works with this dress to make it more age appropriate.
If you wear this Clover Canyon Grecian Bouquet Cutout Printed Neoprene Dress, $317, you must wear it with a SPANX® ‘Thinstincts’ Camisole, $58, underneath!
Le Beau, This Is New York, Sweatshirt, Charles Henry, Crop Quilted Pullover
3. Sweatshirts With Words
You can wear this trend, but not with words across the chest or a sloppy sweatshirt like Maynard G. Krebs. (If you know who he is you are too old to wear a sweatshirt with words!) However a clean lined crop sweatshirt like this one by Charles Henry can look chic. Just make sure that it is long enough and your pants or skirt have a high waist. You may want to wear the SPANX® cami under this top, too, to avoid any skin showing (and to stay warm!)
This Le Beau This Is New York Sweatshirt, $53, is too collegiate, but you can wear this Charles Henry Crop Quilted Pullover, $75
Michael Kors, Leather Flare Skirts, MILLY, Celine Leather Bell Skirt,
4. Short Leather Flare Skirts
When I saw short flare leather skirts going down the runway, I hung my head because I am well past the age of wearing this look ever again… Luckily our baby-boomer designers know that and you can find many longer and still flattering flare leather skirts.
Michael Kors Leather Flare Skirt, now $798 is too short but this MILLY Celine Leather Bell Skirt, $725 is just right!
Sneakers, Flatforms, Steve Madden Bubba, haircalf slip ons, Sam Edelman Becker
5. Flatform Sneakers
The sneaker craze will take us into fall but this trend can be tricky, especially when you are not skipping off to school! Classic slip-on sneakers are becoming more and more embellished (er…tacky). As tempting as it is to be taller, stay off the flatforms and avoid glittery versions of the trend and stick to a classic slip-on sneaker. Don’t yawn, but a black pair may be your best bet!
These Steve Madden ‘Buhba’ Slip-On Sneakers, now $59.96 are for kids, but you can wear these Sam Edelman ‘Becker’ Calf Hair Slip Ons, now $79.90

  1. I completely disagree with this entire list. It’s pretty hypocritical that you think I’m too old to wear it, but not too old to click on your link. I’m much more offended by your willingness to make a buck off of age shaming your readers than I am by a 40 year old in slip on sneakers or a cut out dress. Get over yourselves.
